UMCP has some interesting and selective undergraduate honors and residential options. It may not be prestigious in the same way UVa is, but it has a lot to offer.

It's very familiar, not that attractive, full of kids you already know, and so close to home that you don't have an excuse if the parents want you to come home to see Aunt Maizie visiting from Des Moines.

+1 I grew up in LA and few of my friends wanted to go to UCLA. At least in CA you can go really away and still be in-state.

I also wish MD had more than one "good" state school. Va has William and Mary AND UVA. It would be nice if MD had a second well regarded school in another part of the state.

St Marys College seems to going through a rough patch right now but I think it has a lot of potential if you want a SLAC experience (in a nice but non-urban setting).

Please elaborate. DD is interested in St. Mary's. We looked at the school and liked what we saw, particularly the price tag. It's an honors college. What's going on there?

You can probably google it. The school was significantly under enrolled the last couple of years. I think the new pres or ad was ousted as a result (or certainly talk of it).

If I remember correctly, there were two issues past 2-3 years. 1) new President and people he brought in didn't mix well with the faculty members and there were some internal frictions to begin with; and 2) St. Mary switched from their own application form to Common App (starting HS class of 2013) and they over-estimated how many kids will actually commit to school. When May 1 came and went, their incoming class was significantly lower than they need to generate $ to operate the school. Now, I think the (then) new President is gone (?) and it may still be trying to recover from the mess. YOu can probably google more details.

Apparently St. Mary's recruiters completely bypassed Howard County(!) one year:

Anonymous wrote:At our W school in MoCo at least 50% of the kids apply to UMD, and probably 75-80% are accepted. So it's not the school discouraging MoCo kids by any stretch. It does seem like more kids are starting to actually go to UMD from our school, with price being a major factor. For many it's not their first choice but I know a number of kids were accepted elsewhere but their families couldn't justify to cost relative to UMD.

+1 totally agree

Everyone from our private applies to UMD. Many parents choose it because of the cost. DD needs to get merit aid at a private school or she's going to UMD.

UMDCP is much harder to get into than in previous years because of the cost relative to other schools. Plus, UMDCP is accepting fewer in-state students because they need OOS tuition.

I pray DD gets in. It's not far from where we live, but it's a world apart. We're not going to swoop down on DD every weekend. It will be like going to school in CA, only without the palm trees!

Haha! I hope we can convince DS this is true. UMD one of the best in the country for his intended field of major. But, probably 3/4 of Blair applies there and UMD is 15 minutes from our house.

My cousin attended a school where my grandfather had been a prof, and my grandparents still lived nearby. Sometimes on a Sunday morning they'd drop by his frat to say hello. He had stories about frantically ripping down posters in the hallways.

Now that we play Iowa , penn state , Michigan , Michigan state , Nebraska , Ohio state , Indiana etc...

It's so much better than UVA ,wake forest , BC , nc state , Syracuse ... The crowds are huge.

Route 1 is undergoing 10 large scale developments . Btw terp grads love Umd and can go to our school our entire lives for games. It's awesome .

What are the 10 large-scale developments? Depending on what they are, this potentially good news for the area's "curb appeal."

this has most of the projects but left out the 150 million dollar 4star hotel and conference center across from the University entrance and has already broken ground as well as the Urban outfitters center that will be where the applebys is in downtown cp.

I don't think a lot of people are making their college decisions based off national field hockey titles
