Rethinking Maryland

It would save money if my kids could be talked into College Park, but it's just too close and too ugly. I wouldn't live anywhere near the Green Line, so why should I expect my kids to want to attend school there?

And mentions the founder of Under Armour like he cured cancer.

He will probably fund a researcher who cures cancer though. Or Ebola like zuckerman.

You realize he pours money into our (DMV) community.

Your DC doesn't have to. He won't be missed.

No I don't. I do mention the alums who invented coronary stents, the miniaturized insulin pump, implantable cardiac defibrillators, epileptic early warning device, pulse dopplar radar, the universal product code, the hybrid engine, the octane system, google, Sirius satellite radio, retractable landing gear, the muppets, broke Watergate.

Underarmour, the Wire, Largescreen stadium television and Seinfeld are just the massive cultural impact each of which is greater than any other ACC school has produced.

Why the obsession with comparing to ACC schools? Not sure a sports league is ever a good peer group outside of sports (even questionable for the Ivy League) but UMD isn't in the ACC anymore. If you want to use sports leagues for your benchmarks let's chose Michigan, a school that attracts a lot of kids from this area (#2 in applications from my DCs public school). Get with 2014 bro.

Maryland has always been the misfit - too northern for the south and too southern for the north.

Old time Terps relish the ACC, but the reality is that the DMV has become progressively more sophisticated and less sleepy southern - the move to the Big10 feels right.

The University of Maryland gets little attention (especially among the private school crowd) here despite being ranked above schools such as VATech, Indiana and Miami of Ohio that are mentioned regularly. Maryland seems to be held in higher regard by students in New Jersey (1,500 a year go to Maryland) than by DMV students. Maryland has a 95% retention rate that is in line with Top 25 schools and much higher than other schools in the rankings.

The schools that you listed are in pretty, small town locations, with major cities within driving distance. Maybe that is why people prefer them. Also, kids like to get away from home and Maryland may feel like you are going to school in your backyard.

I went to Indiana and I, personally, never liked the scuzzy Route 1 that leads into the University of Maryland. Ick. Indiana Univ. at Bloomington tops Maryland by leaps and bounds if you are talking about the idyllic college town.

Why didn't you stay closer to Bloomington and come crawling back to Umd territory? Because it's in the middle of loserville! it was fun pounding you in the 2002 natty and last week in football. BTW you rank really low in all world university rankings.

Anonymous wrote:The facts on UMD
1) Umd has more Nobel, Pulitzer ,fields medal ,academy award and Emmy award alumni than any school in the ACC.
2) Umd has more national championships (47)than any school in the ACC. ( For example Virginia Tech has zero).
3) College Park has less violent crime than Charlottesville by a significant amount.
4) Umd grads invented/created the following.
Google, Underarmour, pulse Dopplar radar, Sirius satellite radio, Seinfeld , The Muppets, linear programming , the universal product code , broke watergate , liberty meadows , boondocks , the Wire, the Octane System, the first large screen stadium television , the miniturized insulin pump, coronary stents , the automatic parachute , retractable landing gear , the hybrid engine.
Most of these products of Umd alum are greater than anything out of all the ACC schools combined.
5) Umd is a member of the AAU.
6) Umd is a member of the CIC, the Big Ten schools including Hopkins and Chicago. It shares resources and allows for students to take classes between institutions .
7) Umd as installations from the following agencies and organizations ON CAMPUS... NASA , FDA, USDA, Homeland Security, the National Weather Prediction Institute, the American Physics Institute, Raytheon, the National Center for the Study of Foreign Language. NIH .
8)Umd is ranked higher than Uva in every world university ranking.
9) College Park is undergoing a massive development including a huge 4 star hotel and conference center along with 9 other large developments along route 1 including a Whole Foods center , Urban Outfitters center, and a ton of retail/office /residential projects.
10) Umd - Umd Baltimore have a 1billion plus per year research budget which is top 5 in the nation.

Opinion. Umd is a large Big Ten school in a semi urban location located inside the beltway of the Nations Capital. It is not a school for shrinking violets. Children graduate from Umd more adult and tougher than they went in. It's my opinion that is why the alumni have produced so many geniuses and inspired creations. My kids go there and never come home. They are always busy with their friends from Annapolis , Baltimore , NJ, and NY.. Lol.

Nice!

I just checked out the famous Indiana Alumni. It's kind of sad. Seems like a school for shrinking violets that aren't too bright.

I'd have to agree with you. Bloomington is a great college town and Indiana is far more attractive than UMCP. The people are nicer and the alumni actually act like adults.

Repeated use of the phrase "shrinking violets" gives PP away as a repeat dumb-ass.
