Grown woman who talk like little girls as their regular voice

Did they flow from childhood to adulthood with this voice? Did they switch to speaking this way at some point in adulthood? Is it rooted in some sort of social anxiety or emotional issue? Can they help it?

Does anyone know someone well that speaks like this? Can you please enlighten me?

A famous example would be Jennifer Tilly, but I assume her voice is affected and theatrical to some extent. I know a couple of women in real life that talk this way, but not well enough or long enough to know the answers.

I think there is a credible and prevalent psych theory that women who use little girl voices have an abusive past, usually sexual abuse. They are stunted.

My sister said this is a sign of childhood sexual trauma. I have no idea if that is true.

It is, unfortunately.

I heard this on Dr Drew

Agree, on Loveline, Adam and Dr. Drew would always call out the little girl voice. Then, after some questions there almost always turned out to be some abuse issues.

I'd think MOST people who have to all in to programs for advice have messy pasts...I'd like to see if the young-voiced people are any more likely to have had trauma than other callers.

Girly voices are differs from sounding young.

My niece's mother does the girly voice. It baffles my kids. "Why does she talk to me like Im five? It's so annoying." I thought it was just me being irritable.

Interesting about the sexual abuse, I could see that being true.

I get the "Can I please speak to your mother" all the time when people call the house. Even people who know me often mistake me for one of my kids. I apparently have a high pitched voice but I don't/can't hear it. To me, my voice sounds much deeper. I also have a speech disability which I think also throws people off. I've done many, many, many years of speech therapy as a child and young adult to correct.

It's my normal voice, and sometimes my words sound funny.

Even Dr. Pinsky admits that little scientific evidence exists to prove what he hears. "I know of no literature that supports this," he says. His instincts, though, tell him his observations are correct.

Counterpoint: I have a ridiculously deep and gravelly voice naturally. Seriously, I sound like Patty and Selma from the Simpsons gargled rocks with bourbon. So sometimes I kick it into the girly zone (or as close as I can get ) over the phone. Half the time I don't even realize I'm doing it. Someone pointed it out to me years ago.

A friend has this kind of voice because she had surgery when she was a teen that damaged her vocal cords.

DD has a friend who is 10, but is very large for her age. She could easily be mistaken for 13 or 14. The friend often puts on a baby voice. She doesn't use baby words, but gets kind of a pouty look, and makes herself sound like a three year old. I don't know why, but I often wonder if she is trying to overcompensate by making herself sound younger than she is. It seems to be becoming a habit, as she does it more as she gets older.
