I'm not Muslim, but having traveled to a Muslim country where I dressed in hijab and abaya, I can say that I was actually cooler than I would have been with the sun on exposed skin. |
Bzzzzt. The Church advocated - and actually practiced - kindness towards the indigenous people. Try again, Christianophobe. |
The Christian view on this comment from one of the preceding posters:
It is true that men don’t have to cover their heads, but there is a dress code for them, as well. Men must at least be covered from the navel to the knees with loose fitting clothing. The rules for men are different because women are less likely to ogle men than the other way around. Men also shouldn't cut their beards. According to Our Lord: If your right eye causes you to stumble, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. And if your right hand causes you to stumble, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to go into hell. Matthew 5:29-30 Here we see that it is the responsibility of each individual (male or female) to control his or her own urges. If I am "ogling" a member of the opposite sex, I need to work on myself, not expect the object of my ogling to fix him or herself. I pray for all of us that, with the Lord's help, we can take responsibility for our own actions. |
Then why aren't the men dressed like that too, so that they too can be so comfortable? |
+1 Scandinavia is finding this out, sadly. |
Devout Muslim men typically are covered. I actually find it odd that the men in the family you saw were so exposed. My childhood Muslim guy friend and his Dad would never have been without a t-shirt on the beach. |
While we're on the subject of Islam and slavery, did you know that the Islamic slave trade was extremely brutal and genocidal, and enslaved even more Africans than the transatlantic slave trade? Millions died when they were forced to walk across the Sahara. THAT was the actual genocide and mass atrocity that occurred during medieval times, not anything the Catholic Church did. And where does slavery still exist today? Yes, in Muslim countries! But yaaaay, Islam is all enlightened or something. |
1. The hijab helps others to distinguish who's a believer and who's not. Why then should that matter in the eyes of God whether others know my belief system? This is essentially saying that God is fine if we judge each other. divisive? I'd say yes.
2. Women are less likely to ogle than men are. I love this. Because men have uncontrollable urges, rather than force them to control those urges, we force women to wear oppressive items of clothing. Only the woman's husband, brother, sons, grandsons and nephews can see her breasts (covered obviously). 3. Men can walk around without a shirt, yet can't wear gold and silk. (b/c gold and silk are flashy on men? draw attention to them?) I appreciate the effort you put into your posts, but in 2014, I certainly put no faith in the "wisdom" found in an ancient text.

Edward VIII abdicated the throne and was succeeded by his brother, George VI, the current queen's father. HENRY VIII divorced his first wife, Catherine of Aragon, and married Anne Boleyn, who was later beheaded for treason, as it was falsely "proven" she had cheated on him with other men (who were also beheaded). He married 4 more times. Good lord, learn some basic history before trying to spout off about it, |
In the 90s, how many people were all over the internet? How much did the general public know (or care to know) about Islam? Certainly, the Gulf War opened up that door, but the internet exposed the public to new information. I can attempt to find a credible source explaining the quran to me and walk away with a new understanding of Islam. Imagine how Islam would have been received in the 50s when not even blacks and women had rights. But now that's it's somewhat mainstream, people are forming opinions about it and questioning how a "holy text" can have so much influence over a supposedly educated group. Don't be dense. |
A hat works the same way. |
Then the women can wear t-shirts too, instead of a whole freakin' wrapped-up deal. Good to know. |
911 al queda and the scum dancing in the street after the towers fell. |
. . . first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother's eye. Matthew 7:5
I am the Bible quoter from above, so definitely have strong disagreements with Islam; however I think it is very important to remember this quotation from the Bible (or if you are not a Christian to remember the secularized sentiment behind it). Let us fix ourselves before we call others names. |
Women don't swim in their abayas, they swim in something called the burquini, made especially for swimming in a material that protects against sub, uv and doesn't expand in water ![]() |
