I'm not Muslim, but I have two close friends who are Muslim so I cringe when I hear anti-Islam hate speech. I suspect that it is born of ignorance and fear. I didn't hear as much before Gulf War I.
In the 90s, how many people were all over the internet? How much did the general public know (or care to know) about Islam? Certainly, the Gulf War opened up that door, but the internet exposed the public to new information. I can attempt to find a credible source explaining the quran to me and walk away with a new understanding of Islam. Imagine how Islam would have been received in the 50s when not even blacks and women had rights. But now that's it's somewhat mainstream, people are forming opinions about it and questioning how a "holy text" can have so much influence over a supposedly educated group. Don't be dense.
