What chaos? I didn't notice any chaos last year. Maybe because mine are in primary. |
|
The lower grades and upper grades are almost like different schools. The little kids program is certified and does a decent job but the older the kids get, the less they learn. The classroom acoustics are subpar for Montessori, meaning they're really noisy. Most high SES/white families give up between 2nd and 5th grades. Logan kids sometimes enroll at Watkins and Maury barely able to read in second grade. Buyer beware after early childhood.

Dubious. Every kid in my DC's CHML class was reading stage onejk books before or shortly after the start of PK4. |
I don't know about reading skills but as an observer, the difference between PS and the older grades is pretty apparent in the terms of chaos. There have been other threads about this but lord of the flies comes to mind. |
The reading proficiency for Logan is 73%. By comparison, it's 69% for Maury and 57% for Watkins. |
The school is not a tight, disciplined organization with quiet classrooms and hallways... I can't imagine a Montessori school could be that way. They take the "child directed education" to heart. However, I never saw anything close to "Lord of the Flies" in five years there...it's more like a hippie commune than anything else. |
Then you never sat and watched a recess for 15 minutes. Child directed is not always beneficial to every kid on the playground. Also, what happened to the MS Component? Is there a 6th grade this year? |
|
Not only a 6th grade this year, a 7th grade, in the mixed-age Montesssori class context. Not many kids though, I'm not sure exactly how many. Most families who make it to the upper grades/classes still leave after 4th or 5th, for Latin, BASIS, privates, burbs etc.

| Is the departure to leave Montessori in general or Logan in particular? |
Perhaps we should wait until the middle grades have been around for a year or two before making a statement about what most families do. |
Actually, there was always the option to stay for 5th grade. My current 9th grader went through until 4th grade and I remember a couple of kids who actually stayed behind for 5th grade. Granted, back then it might not have been as well known that you could stay for 5th as it is now, with the established middle school program, but I do remember the lead teacher suggesting my kid should stay for 5th. I believe there are currently 15 kids in the middle school program. |
I think in general. I'm the pp who said my kid went through the entire program through 4th grade (current 9th grader) and I remember several of our friends back then left after primary or soon after starting elementary. It's definitely not for everyone (parent or kid) but there are many kids who thrive in that environment. My current 9th grader was fine going all the way through. I pulled my younger son after his first year in the elementary class because he was just not thriving in the environment. He did well in his primary class but as he got older we learned that he needed a lot more structure and routine than Montessori offers. It's like any other school, it may or may not be a good fit for your kid, doesn't mean it's a bad school. |
| I'm wondering why more people are not leaning towards Langdon as the school in the "punishment thread". I know of two families that have pulled their kids from Langdon Montessori due to various issues. From reading the posters full thread, I'm not getting that this would be CHML. |
I had two children spend one year in Elementary Montessori at Logan, they did primary at another Montessori school. It was the worst mistake regarding their education I've ever made. I kept waiting for it to get better and it never did. The difference between primary and elementary at the school were night and day. |
I'm considering Langdon for next year but am confused by this post. Can you add more detail? |
