Dany's story in the books becomes equally frustrating. However, after some re-reading and reading some really interesting insights into why GRRM wrote her story arc that way, I am way more content with it as a jumping off point for Winds of Winter and the future of her character. Long story short: It's necessary for her to see what it really means to lead people, not just conquer them. She is, like most of the Targaryens, overly attracted to war to solve problems. Actually sitting down to rule a people after they are conquered takes patience, compromise, political savvy, and a very strong will to continue doing what's right in the face of massive obstacles and pushback (that you can no longer just solve by murdering everyone who doesn't agree with you like you can in war). In fact, her seduction by Daario in the books vs. her dutiful marriage to Loraq is a neat metaphor for her choice of war/passion over peace/compromise. There's a brilliant series of essays here: http://meereeneseblot.wordpress.com/2013/09/27/untangling-the-meereenese-knot-part-i-who-poisoned-the-locusts/ They are really very book-based, but they cover the three most frustrating story arcs (Dany, Jon, and Tyrion in ADWD) and really dive into the reasons GRRM wrote the characters' stories that way (SO FRUSTRATINGLY). Basically, he was showing how each of the "main three" have huge flaws that will prevent them from being appropriate leaders: Dany loves war and thinks peace is boring, Jon wants to be a hero more than a pragmatic leader, and Tyrion is cynical, disillusioned, and disgusted by people in general. I'm hoping that the books (and I guess the show, maybe before the books?) will resolve some of these more satisfactorily in TWOW and ADOS by finally having them do interesting stuff again

| That's cute, you still thing GRRM is actually going to finish the series. He's way too happy visiting every Con he can to be bother with finishing what he started 20 years ago. He's going to pull a Robert Jordan. At least he told the HBO guys how the story is supposed to end, so there is that. |
