Where is CM moving to?

I guess I'm just saying that if we think about it, many of the very popular charter schools are not (or as of next year will not be) located on the metro line:

LAMB
Mundo Verde
Inspired Teaching
Cap City
Yu Ying

Why? I'm guessing because good, long-term spaces on the metro lines are probably nearly impossible to come by.

I'm not the person who originally raised not going because it's inaccessible, but just for the record, I don't see anyone posting in this conversation saying that it's only "accessible" if it's by a metro (train) stop. The question is how close it is to a metro or bus stop, and how accessible the bus line(s) are. I don't know where the new space is, so I can't comment on accessibility. But I don't think anyone is saying a train stop is mandatory to be considered "accessible".

Ding ding ding. Same reason why houses and apartments close to Metro stations are more expensive. The difference is that charters are locked in to how much they can spend on facilities, and it isn't enough. The per pupil facilities allotment hasn't gone up at all (not even accounting for inflation), since 2009.

MV's new location is ~.5 mile from the NoMA metro station on the red line. Certainly walkable.

YY has parent run buses and extensive car pooling.

Actually there are many empty buildings on the grounds of the Old Soldiers Home. Wow I was trying not to get too invested in any of the pie in the sky lottery schools so I wouldn't be too disappointed, but if they are moving right across from where we live, that's going to be hard.
If that's true I wonder if they would have access to a lot of the green space there. Golf, fishing, gardening and cyclocross in after care!

Tell me about it. Think that at least 200 of the 1,000 people applying will drop off due to location?

You can count on at least one--my family. We are very close to the current location and thought of it as our top choice, but the new location isn't accessible to public transit and will be a nightmare for us, assuming the DCUM info is accurate.

I love when people think bus into public transportation. What small town are you from?

We take the bus every day to my toddler's daycare, so I am certainly not anti-bus. But having to walk .63 miles from the closest bus stop to the school (according to the WMATA trip planner) is a no-go for me with a three-year old.

I did metro trip planner and it had me walking .3 miles from the closest bus stop.

For the record, I live in between that metro station and MV and I wouldn't make that walk without a gun. But, yeah...it is .5 a mile from the metro.

I drive by there every day and would never walk a child along that stretch of FL avenue either.

Look, it's easy to judge one of these schools when you are outside applying. Remember, this school - or one of the others - that you are currently trashing here could be the school that you dedicate your time to for the next few years. The school your child loves.

Until you are part of the family of the school, you don't know why it chooses to do something.

Good luck to everyone in the lottery!

The issue is not whether it is accessible by bus, but just that the specific buses are usually accessible to fewer people than the metro is. Same thing with IT--unless you live downtown the G8 is not that accessible, so it reduces the pool to those who live near the bus, or are not daunted by the challenge of 2 buses or bus + metro with a small child.

The H8 is the one that WMATA was telling me to get on, and it said it was a .63 mile walk to the address.

MV is right on the 90/92 bus line and I think a few blocks from the NoMa metro. (Have not looked at it further because we are in the 90/92 bus.) YY is right on the H8. The others we haven't applied to--wouldn't be able to get there.

Wait, I think we have the basis for the next great charter school...

How do I become a founder of this school?

Haricots Morts!

Soldiers home has multiple entrances. I think if you look at a map you'll see the H8 drops you right at the door. The official "address" won't really help you know how close it is. So maybe it is doable?

I for one am too excited about the new location! I have a DC who is currently in a school nearby in Rock Creek Cemetery and it is a delightful place to have a school. The Soldiers Home has the same setting, it not better. We commute regularly by bus to DC's current school and because taking two buses is longer, oftentimes DC has walked the 45 minutes home or done a long walk to one bus so as not to transfer followed by a two block walk. DC is under 6 yrs old. The surrounding area is pretty okay. My only frustration is that whereS before I wasn't stressing getting in, now with ft is location I will be praying fervently that we win the lottery!
