Freedom Hill - Vienna

You received something many people in the County would love to have -- adminstrative pupil placement without the hoops to jump through to substantiate the request.

We don't get transportation and there is no commitment as yet to renew the transfer option past the 2013-14 year. Neither would be an issue had other FH parents not gotten Patty Reed to block the administrative boundary change.

Technical correction...this was brought up as an expedited boundary adjustment (requiring School Board approval), not an administrative boundary change (which the cluster could have done on its own) -- important distinction as too many children are involved and it exceeded the administrative boundary policy threshold.

...and WRT the petitions -- what do people in Haymarket or Arlington, or other parts of Vienna have to do with this? Just because someone signs a petition does not mean they have standing in the decision-making process.

Not renewing the administrative pupil placement before a full boundary study won't serve the cluster superintendent's likely 2-3 year plans for the pyramid nor Patty Reed's or Pat Hynes' for that matter. Renewing the administrative pupil placement would be a pro forma exercise. There is a significant number of classrooms coming open during that timeframe that would give a lot flexibility in moving boundaries. I would expect that you would find significant support for that across the entire Freedom Hill ES community.

We don't get transportation...

OP. Many of the people in the Town of Vienna at any Vienna school walk or bike. Most of us don't have transportation to the school because we live under 1 mile to the elementary schools. I don't get your argument.

Still don't get it

Cunningham Park is all Thoreau and mostly Madison. That would be better than being at a school where the other 90% go to Kilmer and Marshall. Which part of that did you fail to comprehend?

It appears what you failed to comprehend is when you buy a home in a triangle, that you actually have to send your kids to that triangle. Deal with it, or move.

They are welcome to move some of the Vienna ES children over to Wolftrap if Vienna needs more room. Right now the boundary splits along the middle of streets like Glyndon rather than between backyards.

You also have the right to petition for a change, and our efforts have already earned us the right to transfer to Vienna for at least a year. It's just silly the change hasn't been made permanent because FCPS had to appease some noisy, pushy Marshall parents who were worried that our departure might hurt test scores in their pyramid.

...and FCPS had to appease the "noisy pushy" Town of Vienna Freedom Hill/Thoreau/Madison parents with children currently in school who adamantly want to stay at Freedom Hill and find redistricting to Vienna ES problematic. The FCPS public meeting at Freedom Hill showed that the Town of Vienna parents directly affected by this proposed change are evenly split, both sides holding very strong feelings for or against the proposal. The cluster superintendent could have just as easily said, "No," without administrative pupil placement. He gave you what you needed, the opportunity to enroll at Vienna ES; as one leadership guru says, "Don't the the perfect be the enemy of the good."

All due respect, I don't agree with that statement. I was at the meeting. Yes, there people for and against the change that were directly impacted by the change. However, the meeting didn't include some of the parents directly impacted that attended the VES meeting the evening before that were for the change. Also, people not represented from Southeast Vienna community were home owners who are already pupil placing to VES and people who in private school etc. In addition, people who do not have children in elementary school are for his change. That meet was not a true representation of the people who support this change.
