Which DC public or charter school should Michelle send her kids to

Anonymous
there is NO way they are going to public school

if they attended private in Chicago, they will attend private in DC or in a suburb

im sure its not because they have anything against public schools

its just for security reasons

my vote: holton-arms

Anybody know about Francis-Stevens? The Post mentioned it today, Amy Carter went there.

We don't know anything about their local public in Chicago, and whether it was a viable option or not. Supposedly they lived in a "transitional" neighborhood.

Not sure why this is posted here--Yu Ying will only be preK through 2nd grade next year so no chance the Obamas would go there. Plus YY will never be admitting kids past second grade unless they have prior experience with the language.

Barrack said he regretted he didn't speak a foreign language, how much of a new century gesture would it be to have his children learning Mandarin?

Besides, isn't the younger daughter in 2nd grade? I heard Yu Ying would take new 2nd graders.

Oh, give it up. They're not going to Yu Ying. It's nice that people feel positively about the school, but my goodness, learning Mandarin is not the first priority for many parents. I know it's the latest accessory for people who want to give their child some perceived 21st Century "edge" but it's not a big deal to everybody.

We don't really know what's a "big deal" to Michelle and Barack, so I wouldn't try to speak for them.

I don't think they'd go for a brand new school, however.

As a parent of a child in public school, I think it would be great if they chose any of schools mentioned in this thread, but I bet they won't. Not because the kids wouldn't do great, but I'd imagine that Michelle will rely on acquaintences to tell her about DC schools since she is picking a school from afar. I'm guessing her sphere of influence will urge her to go private. People don't make decisions in a vacuum, and I am not sure if she has anyone in her circle of friends advocating for DC public or charter schools. Maybe she does and I will be surprised.

PP, you are correct.

How unprecedented would it be if the kids were home schooled?

So much for the DCUM betting pool.

I'm pretty sure the school in the Obama's neighborhood was pretty bad - it can be a rough place. The Lab School, where the girls attend, is probably the best private in town, maybe even one of the best in the Midwest. If I were in their shoes, I'd send my kids there. It is a pretty traditional school, which may mean they'll look at something like Cathedral.

Why? Just asking out of curiosity.

The lab school is anything but traditional, it is very Progressive therefore, very unlike NCS/Beauvoir.
GDS, MARET, LOWELL, GREEN ACRES are some (if not all) the progressive schools in this area.
