Take it easy. Less than 10% of the Asian high school students in Fairfax end up at TJ. The rest survive.

And then there's a whole other thread complaining of TJ kids needing remedial Math help. Well, I wonder why.

How do you know this? Is the school willing to discuss specifics as to why an application may have been denied?
Thank you for any information!

Call (571) 423-3770, ask for Admissions specialist. Give student id and ask for the reason of rejection. I did and I got the response saying SIS was the culprit.Even she mentioned essays and recommendations were good, just on the basis of SIS, my DS got rejected. She says may be on that very day, he did not do good on SIS.

Thank you for that information, it is very helpful. If you don't mind, what kind of activities did your son write about?

To be honestly, 45M/40V doesn't look strong. I've seen 48M/45V got rejected. 18 on AMC 8 is not in top 30% either. With those scores, something else has to be very strong to get in.

Vocab doesnt matter for the final selection

for a 20% weight, the difference between 45 and 48 is a difference of 1.2. Not much. Unless all that got selected are within 1 point range

Participation on AMC 10 and his selection in middle school math counts team. Also about his achievement of JHU CTY and course participation.

http://www.fcps.edu/pla/TJHSST_Admissions/about_us2.html

TJ emphasizes kids to have shown interest in Math and Science related subjects as per above URL. Also scoring 18/25 on AMC 8 is not bad at all. Middle school kids in 8th grade on an average falls around 14/25 level. Those problems are way tougher than TJ math tests.

I definitely know it is not an end of the world for my son, if not TJ still he will excel, but not happy either with the selection criteria.

Anonymous wrote:PP with the 50M and 48V, are your kids drowning in homework, can you describe the workload, grades, etc.

Does anyone know if the TJ test scores correlate with how well the kids will do over the next four years?

Also, how critical is the course selection? Can one graduate with the "minimum" required AP and honors courses as a strategy for surviving TJ?

Yes, there will be a lot of homework and don't expect too much of weekend break either. Time management is very important. Both kids told me that they are working harder than their friends who went to UVA. Most of TJ students will know what they like to study by the end of Freshman year. They will select course in accordance with their "major" and most of TJ students take between 6 to 10 AP classes, it depends how good they are and how well the AP fit in their school schedule.

Get over yourself. You are not a student at TJ, just a typical helicopter parent.

Did any other parents call to ask for the reason for rejection? My child has straight A's and very high test scores, so I suspect SIS. I'm not sure whether I truly want to know, though, and don't want to get branded as "that parent" by admissions office in case my child applies again next year.

Wow, racist much? Is there a different standard for Asians than for everyone else?

Non Asian accepted. DD had 48 E and 31 M but other outstanding attributes. We are so excited for her.
