I posted both first and last names. I taught these "children" 20 years ago. They are now in their 30's. Shame on me.

Bad spellings and pop culture references are hmmmmmm, but honestly, the worst names to me are the top 20.... Any given year. Why be so bland? I'd rather have an unusual name than be one of three Sophia's, Emily's or Isabella's in my class every year.

And no, my childrens names are not listed here.

Ikea
Unique Buffalo (Buffalo was her last name)
African Queen (again, Queen was the last name)
sisters--Angela, then the next year Tangela
Donta (yes, I know you just said "Don tah" but it was pronounced "Don tay" as in the dude who had an inferno. )

I knew an Ikea too. WTF?
Also, Clinique Lauren because Mom was wearing Clinique Happy perfume and Ralph Lauren jeans when DD was conceived.
Strider

These are all kids in Berkeley/Oakland.

I like Hunter. I like Harper, too.

Hunter - kills animals
Harper - harpie/ harp on smth

These are the associations I have with these names, but I'd like to change my perception, esp. since they're becoming popular. I would really appreciate someone chiming in and giving me the background of these names, or more positive associations. I'm not being derisive - just an immigrant with ESL.

You reminded me! I've know two people named Simian-- a WASP girl who spelled it just like that, and a black boy spelled Simeon.

Simeon is a Hebrew name, and biblical - "he has heard.".

I knew a student named Perfect. Very good kid and smart too!

I also knew a Simian from childhood. It always freaked me out that she was named after a primate. I also knew a Sunny and Bunny. In my teaching life I've seen far too many lovely ones, but some of them are my current students. I will revive this thread in 10 years to post those.

What's wrong with Burke? I know a girl named Burke and it's her mom's maiden name. I happen to love it.

I love Harper, just because of Harper Lee. Hunter is a horrendous name, it has nothing but violent connetations and a prevalent name for rednecks.

It's disgustingly pretentious.
