I blame Adam Lanza's mother.

WPI is one facility. Fwiw, I am a public interest lawyer who works with homeless people. My area of expertise is related to specialty courts such as mental health courts. Have you toured any jails recently? I've toured jails in major cities across the country as well as local communities such a Montgomery county. I know what I'm talking about. There is very little if anything that most parents can do for their adult child with "issues."

They can not keep Glocks in their homes.

Agreed.

The first thing I thought when I heard he killed his mother first and then went to the school on a shooting spree, was that no SANE parent of a mentally disturbed person keeps guns unlocked in the home (but likely if she was that worried about him harming her, she may have kept handguns in a safe just for her own protections).

My hunch is, he used a weapon of some type against his mother (knife, etc) threatening to kill her if she didn't open the gun safe. Once she opened it, he killed her and took her ID badge to continue the rampage at the school. Why the rage toward little kids and teachers? That's what escapes a sane mind, other than perhaps he was twistedly jealous of his mom doting on kids at school or of her having a life outside their home (he lived with his mother, correct?)

Either way, we don't have any facts and placing blame at this point on anyone other than the shooter is a waste of time.

Did you see his eyes in the police photo? Just like the eyes of the movie theater shooter. Just like the eyes of the gabby giffords shooter. If you research these incidents, its clear that young adult men suffering from mental health issues tend to commit these acts. This kid was not right...clearly there was something wrong with him (regardless of whether he had a formal diagnosis). We don't need to wait for an investigation to determine that he had mental health issues. Even the most violent thug wouldn't massacre young children....that's what crazy people do. We have acts of gun violence where one or two people are shot nearly every day in communities across the country...those are typically acts of violence. These kinds of massacres are prompted by some sort of mental break. Rational, violent people shoot one person at a time (read the crime reports in dc). Crazy people go on shooting sprees and take out whoever they can.

She was not a school teacher. She was a substitute. Different benefits

The first thought I had is that maybe she had these guns protect herself from her son

Guns are used to kill people. Why are we shocked when they're used accordingly?

Hey, guess what? Turns out she was an "avid gun collector" and often took her kids target shooting.

Oh yeah. I'm blaming this woman.

She lived with (by all accounts) a mentally disturbed son.
And yet she felt the need to own multiple guns, including a semi-automatic rifle.

She did not keep these guns out of her disturbed son's possession.
Because of her COMPLETE ineptitude, she died.
Unfortunately she took 26 other innocent people with her.

I'm 35 and learned at age 30 that my father owned numerous guns in my childhood. Neither I or my brother EVER knew this. Because he was a responsible gun owner. NEVER ONCE did he mention them, take them out or keep them unlocked. I myself will never own a gun.

I have to agree with you and I said this exact same thing to my husband last night. I am a prosecutor and most of the people that are convicted are illegally in possession of guns (i.e., no license or registration) and they are NOT mentally ill - just bad people. Here, the mother knew her son was mentally ill; yet, kept guns in the house, which he clearly had access to. It was the perfect storm and so preventable. Yes, he could have obtained weapons illegally and committed the same crime but here she made it so easy for him.

Maybe the older brother Ryan put him (Adam) up to this!
He seemed very defensive and hostile. Now he can sue CNN etc... for blaming him.

Prosecutor,
How do we know he had access to them? How do we know that he didn't take a knife to her throat and force her to unlock wherever she stored the guns?
You have made assumptions but you have not made your case!

Other than make the mentally ill ADULT child go live somewhere else and/or remove all of the guns from the home. For those arguing maybe the guns were under lock and key - clearly they were not secured enough or the killer would not have had access to them.

Divorced and remarried.

The kids apparently took the divorce very hard:

That article is so irresponsible.

why were they even in the home??? If I had a mentally ill child there would not be guns in the home period--regardless of locks, bars, safes, etc.
I would FIND ANOTHER HOBBY as would any rational and competent parent.
