1. She may have hidden them from her son, and he found them.
2. How did she know he was mentally ill? He may have been autistic or have Asperger's. That's not mental illness. I have not read a single item pointing to a diagnosis of mental illness. She's dead. Her son's dead. The students and the adults at the school are dead. What is the point of this blame game? |
| The point is to determine how the deaths of 20 children & others may have been prevented. |
|
Pp, dont read this if you dont get the point.
The point of the blame game is to try to prevent future tragedies. People try to blame the convenient culprit, guns. But if people took responsibility for themselves, their families, and their neighborhood, tragedies could be averted. I know every one of my neighbors in my one block radius. Bet you anything not one of them is a terrorist. I can also tell you that none of my kids or neighbors kids will kill people. Why? Because I, and people in my family and neighborhood have awareness. Nearly Every one of these recent tragedies could have been avoided, such as that batman killer guy, because the signs were there-people didnt act on the signs. I believe a good approach would be to hold parents accountable up to a certain age. Remember that kid from bethesda who was making bombs in his garage or something? i seem to recall the parents were held accountable. (Though cant recall the details.). This is a good start. Would be more effective than gun control. |

How do we hold a dead woman accountable?
This thread would make sense if she were alive. She's dead. Plus, we do not know the facts. How was Aurora preventable? His parents lived in California. His therapist expressed concerned to the school, but they couldn't monitor him 24/7. I would love to find ways to prevent these massacres, but I'm not finding anything constructive in the suggestion that we hold parents accountable. This happened around Columbine. Until parents can read their children's minds, they are at a disadvantage. |

It annoys me OP that you used his name, you gave him what he wanted....fame. You keep his name alive.
You OP are part of the problem and I blame you for the next shooter. |
|
P.S. Yes guns are the convenient culprit. It would be easier to regulate them than human beings. Gun control would not end all gun violence, but it could reduce it.
I don't understand why people support the sale of assault weapons and semi-automatics to civilians. Who needs them? I agree it was mystifying to learn that the mother owned these three guns. However, holding a dead woman accountable is not going to get us very far. Obviously it would have been better if she didn't possess these weapons. |
| +1 and obviously she was mentally ill cause she divorced and the dad is doing fine in another family. Often women divorce for no reason (unhappy in marriage) when they are mentally ill. |
| Here's the thing about the mental health crisis in this country: the vast majority of folks go without appropriate care or treatment since (a) their parents can't afford it (if they are minors), (b) they cannot afford it themselves, (c) they refuse treatment. The guy was clearly mentally ill...it's very possible that he hadn't been formally diagnosed. Many young men suffer mental breaks in their late teens or early adulthood. And even if the parents knew something was wrong, there is very little they could do...it is damn near impossible to have someone treated against their will. The only thing the mom could have done was keep the damn guns out of her house. Foolish. Sad. |

And for all we know the guns were locked in a shed and he found them, found the key and went in the shed for something else and there they were. Or maybe she had them on display in the dining room and they went on shooting ranges on a regular basis.
We just don't know, folks. WE DO NOT HAVE ALL THE FACTS. |

You all are complete idiots. The guns did not kill anyone, a psychotic coward did. If he was not able to get a firearm he would have built a bomb or used a knife (see the incident that just happened in China). Anyone else notice that all the mass shootings take place in "gun free zones"? Gee I wonder why???
Firearms are used much, much more often to protect people than they are ever used to kill the innocent. Often without a shot being fired. In addition, studies have shown that the ONLY thing that has shown to be effective in deterring and preventing this many people from being shot is the presence of an armed intervention (be it police or a citizen) and that concealed carry laws have been effective in bringing down crime rates. As for the Second Amendment, read Federalist paper #29 for an education. |
I wish people would stop making up scenarios.......This is tragedy enough without playing random blame games without knowing what precipitated the event. How does this help the victims or their families and really, shouldn't that be of primary concern now? |
If he used a knife-- not as many people would be killed.. U can run from a knife...it takes longer.. Assault weapons mow people down and kill in MUCH greater numbers. Societies with strict gun laws don't see this type of violence. Get fucking real. |

I posted this on another thread, but maybe the gun morons don't realize it, so I'm re-posting:
I'm a pediatric ER doctor - send me 27 knife wounds - even bad ones - I promise we will be able to fix all - or almost all of them. Gunshots in small children? Those little ones won't even make it into an ambulance to drive to me. The mentally ill are everywhere - they may even be prone to violence, but if they don't have access to guns, they can't shoot people. |
|
11:16 Look at the stats from around the world, and tell me there is no correlation between gun control and gun violence.
Ah, the Federalist Papers. How useful. It's a different world. At the time the Federal Papers were written, slavery was allowed. Women couldn't own property or vote. Let's see a list of how civilians using assault weapons and semi-automatic rifles has saved lives. |
| Agree with OP. Blah, blah, blah, mental illness is no one's fault. SHE SHOULD HAVE GOTTEN RID OF THE GUNS! Full stop. I hope the rest of that family burns in hell. The brother, the father, they all have blood on their hands. |
