Thoughts on Fairfax neighborhoods

How come any time anyone posts the current US News rankings without even mentioning Marshall, somebody goes bat$hi# crazy that it must be some crazy Marshall lady? I don't have a dog in this fight (my kids are headed for *gasp* Falls Church HS), but one persons opinion does not invalidate the rankings. They are what they are, and if all of a sudden Langley was ranked above TJ, no one would pass a stone.

The rankings are out there, for all to google. It doesn't seem like the people who support Marshall are crazy, but the anti-Marshall sock puppeter that replies to herself to support herself is off the deep end.

It's a wonder anyone moves here at all after reading all this lunacy.

Nope. There are multiple posters responding to Crazy Marshall Lady's posts, and you can spot a CML post (such as 20:27) and the sock-puppets that will probably follow from a mile away.

No one else but CML would constantly bring up the US News rankings. FCPS knew they were based on flawed data (in Marshall's case, the incorrect assumption that 99% of Marshall students take one or more IB courses before they graduate) and didn't even bother to put out a press release when they came out, even though most of the top-ranked Virginia schools were from Fairfax County.

Waaaahh mclean wasn't #1, waaaaAAJHHHHH

Vienna splits between Madison and Marshall mainly and I hear good things about both. I'm not sure what all the fuss is about. People think Marshall is rigorous and has good sports but is also a little more well rounded with it's IB and Academy programs. It also has more diversity and is a smaller school but getting bigger soon. They think Madison is rigorous with many club and sports options. Also a little more homogeneous. There seems to be an even swap between children applying to Marshall from Madison and to Madison from Marshall. Marshall's obviously in the top half to top third of Fairfax County high schools. Can we please stop arguing about it's exact spot?

Vienna also goes to Oakton.

OP, you may want to look at Falls Church. I have a couple of neighbors who commute to Pentagon City not the best commute but it's doable. (I'm not the CML... I just happen to live in the Marshall HS pyramid) For elementary, Shrevewood is good, Haycock (AAP center) is even better, careful where you buy for Haycock as they are redistricting.

I haven't read all the responses, are you looking for single family, townhome?

OP here. Haycock in Falls Church sounds like it may be great option. How long would my husband's commute be the Pentagon? We're looking for a single family home PP.

Someone else mentioned Falls Church City, and you should definitely keep it in the mix. The Falls Church City high school, George Mason, is ranked second in Virginia, and Falls Church city has a small-town atmosphere.

Alternatively, housing in the Woodson district is most affordable of all the listed "best high schools", and there's a metro bus direct to the Pentagon that travels very near there -- right down Little River Turnpike, as I recall. Canterbury Woods is an excellent elementary school that feeds to Woodson.

Canterbury Woods ES , Frost MS, and Woodson HS are great options for a Pentagon commute.

Haycock is a great option. That's about 30 minutes by train, changing at Rosslyn. Driving would be about 35-40 minutes in rush hour, more like 20 minutes if traveling in non-rush.

Must warn you that there are some posters here who are quite jealous of Haycock, so be prepared. But Haycock/Longfellow/McLean are wonderful schools.

Shrevewood is the same commute (same metro stop) and also a good school. I'm not jealous of Haycock, FWIW. It's a great school, but so is Shrevewood. They are very different, but both good schools.

Jealous of Haycock? Are all of the McLean mom's this egotistical? Haycock is a great school yes but it is over crowded. No one is secretly trying to hurt your feelings because they don't go to haycock or cry themselves to sleep. Now if you are in your late 40s and look like you are 25, that is something people would be jealous of!

You are only proving my point. I hope the OP will look past the sniping because it's a great school.

Yes. Yes, they are. I was at the renovation/redistricting meeting last night and the parents were nasty, condescending, and absolutely disrespectful to their school board member and asst superintendent. I wouldn't talk to my worst enemy the way they were talking to these people. It made me ashamed to be associated with them.

Haycock is a great school, and it has a wonderful, supportive and engaged PTA. I'm happy that parents there advocate for their school. They simply want the upcoming renovations to be well-planned.

Haycock is a great school, but one wouldn't know it by the way the parents acted last night! I'm sure any parent would never want their child to act the way the parents acted last night - complete disrespect.
