Thoughts on Fairfax neighborhoods

| We are thrilled to be moving to Fairfax County in June 2013 and to have the opportunity to live in a great public school district. Our son will be entering 1st grade. What are the neighborhoods we should consider if we want the best of the best? Our budget on a home is apx. 1 million. |

| There are a lot of fabulous school you can go to on that budget. Figure out your priorities--AAP center school, Language Immersion, Stem school, small class size, High SES of peers and go from there. |

Are you moving here from out of town, or from within the DC area? Assuming out of town, I will paint with a very broad brush and say that for $1M, you can afford to buy anywhere in Fairfax County, and that the schools anywhere in Fairfax County will be good. However, Fairfax County is huge, and living near where you work is a big, big deal, because the traffic here will kick your butt. Tell us to where you need to commute and that will narrow it down a bit.
Also, what are your home requirements? You can get a home anywhere for $1M in FFX County, but you can't necessarily get any type of a house for that budget. |

| There seem to be a lot of posts with discussions about $1, $2, and $3 million houses lately. I especially remember the McLean poster wanting to have her child attend public school and talk about expensive trips and shopping sprees all the time and not have anyone take offense. Even if you have this money, why do you want your children doing this? The median house price in the county is half that so most of the people on this board are probably living in houses bought at this price or less. If you have $1 million to spend on a house, any realtor will tell you that you can live anywhere in Fairfax with maybe a couple of trade offs in some of the expensive sections. There are houses available within every elementary school district boundary at least within a several month time frame. Most have houses in that range or lower all the time. Since your housing price is not tight, I'd figure out several favorite schools and best commuting routes and then worry about the house and the neighborhood community. |

00:19, I think this board skews to the yuppie. Most of the sub-$300k types who can't afford anything ok in DC and decide what they can get in North Arlington isn't worth it skulk out to Ashburn and off the board by the time their kids hit school age.
Exurban and proud, yo. With that said, Langley and McLean are the holy grails. If you want/demand something new in your house, then Madison and Oakton. Falls Church City (and George Mason HS) is a possibility too for that budget. You can even get something decent in North Arlington for that price. If you can't find something there, or even in Woodson and Marshall, for your $1mn, you're too fussy IMO. |

I remember her, too. The Marshall HS teacher who always comes out swinging if anyone writes anything bad about Marshall. This is the only DCUM "personality" that I have recognized. |
