40 plus and hip/ attractive/ fashionable

Anonymous
It's funny, I don't consider myself particularly hip or fashionable, and yet I wear a lot of the stuff the allegedly hip and fashionable people wear--long tops with leggings or skinny jeans and boots, a-line skirts, etc. These are hardly of-the-moment things as I've been wearing them for at least 2-3 years and I am hardly the first one to adopt a new fashion. So my point is, perhaps hip and fashionable is all in the eye of the beholder.

To riff on a PP, holiday themed sweaters! Time to bring out the colored leaves of fall theme! Pair those with a cute pair of autumn inspired earrings, some comfy elastic-waist jeans, and some orthopedic-friendly shoes and you are set! (Go ahead and throw on a necklace that matches your earrings if it's a special occasion!)

Agreeing that some get the boots out too early. On tues I saw a woman in mini brown sweater dress and suede knee boots with 3 inch heels. The high was 80 that day. Ridiculous. Also the shorter the skirt the lower your heel should be. At 8 am she looked like she was going to the club.

How about starting with a fresh haircut, clothes that fit, high quality bras, better posture, a good bag, and nice shoes? I think that 90% of he 40 something women I see in downtown DC would look 90% better with these basics alone.

a designer that comes to mind is michael kors. i think he does very pretty clothes that fit my above criteria.

Keep in mind we have ages from teens to 70 year olds on this board. Take every criticism with a grain of salt.

Anonymous wrote:I find this thread totally depressing. I just turned 40 and don't feel a day older than 30. I'm healthy, fit and have young kids..... I wear whatever the heck I want to wear. If I want to wear skinny jeans I wear them, if I want to wear something low cut, who cares? If I feel fat and just want to wear a big Tshirt and sweats, I do. Why do you need to find a different wardrobe to TRY TO stay hip just because you aRe 40+? Just be yourself and where what looks good on you and/or whatever goes with your mood. I did this when I was 20 and I do this now that I'm 40. Just love yourself and don't worry about what others think.

Me too. I'm reading the above and thinking much of it sounds 60+. That's what you get for trying to find a mold and fit into it. Try instead to find YOU.

I'll be sticking with my dark-wash jeans and graphic tees, thanks. I'll probably even keep wearing my most-favorite-ever pair of jeans with the blown-out knees from time to time. I will be making one purchase this fall: my all-stars are getting pretty ratty.

(I bet I just flipped the DC-bobs right off a bunch of Retin-a'd heads.)

I like you.

But I'm 40 and don't own any mom jeans, Frye boots or anything made by Dansko.

Be who you are.

This! For my 40th birthday, I tossed all my bras and bought some nice high end bras. It's made all the difference.

An angel loses its wings every time a 40+ wears a saggy bra.

I went to Coup de Foundre. Even though everyone says they are not, they were very helpful....
