| If you're aiming for "hip," I'd add moto boots, cowboy or Frey boots w/ skirts and dresses, graphic tees, and a slightly edgy leather jacket. |
Ew. "Pathetic" is the word that comes to mind. The phrase that comes to mind is "trying too hard." |
This was so helpful! I am going to wear this on sat for ds birthday party, I think it's pretty hip-and affordable! http://shop.nordstrom.com/S/diane-von-furstenberg-silk-blouse-pants/3381201?origin=category&contextualcategoryid=0&fashionColor=&resultback=0 |
| PP...are you serious? |
| No, no I'm not |
| Jigsaw print!! You could do a whole themed party. Jigsaw invites, puzzles as favors, jigsaw piece cake ... |

I think a bit of Jcrew, a bit of anthropologie, a nice coat, boots (under and over jean style), a few signature or just fun pieces of jewelry. No logo bags, if expensive fine, but not logo. I.e. Chloe bag great, usually pretty subtle. Same goes for clothes.
Don't dress like 20 or God Forbid 16. No cleavage. Tights with skirt and sweater fine. Jean, even skinny if you can pull off fine, but keep everything simple and not too tight. Classic white button down, great fitting jeans, cashmere, appropriate dress length (right above knee), fun shoes and great bags and accessories. |
| See how french women dress. Tons of books on this topic these days. They do it right. |
Ummmm... these styles work if you're a size 2, 4 or 6 and NOT a pear shape, like me. I'm in good shape but these models are all pencil thin with no hips So, what do people REALLY wear to address the OPs original question?? |
| I think lots of good advice above. I have the How Not to Look Old Book. That and flipping through pics of Kim Gordon is a good starting point. |
Really?? This vest is NOT hip. |
| I find this thread totally depressing. I just turned 40 and don't feel a day older than 30. I'm healthy, fit and have young kids..... I wear whatever the heck I want to wear. If I want to wear skinny jeans I wear them, if I want to wear something low cut, who cares? If I feel fat and just want to wear a big Tshirt and sweats, I do. Why do you need to find a different wardrobe to TRY TO stay hip just because you aRe 40+? Just be yourself and where what looks good on you and/or whatever goes with your mood. I did this when I was 20 and I do this now that I'm 40. Just love yourself and don't worry about what others think. |
Me too. I'm reading the above and thinking much of it sounds 60+. That's what you get for trying to find a mold and fit into it. Try instead to find YOU. I'll be sticking with my dark-wash jeans and graphic tees, thanks. I'll probably even keep wearing my most-favorite-ever pair of jeans with the blown-out knees from time to time. I will be making one purchase this fall: my all-stars are getting pretty ratty. (I bet I just flipped the DC-bobs right off a bunch of Retin-a'd heads.) |
What are your recommendations? |

btw---A-line versus pencil has nothing to do with age. It has to do with your shape.
40 year olds can wear anything "hip" as long as it fits well, isn't too short or revealing...and short is relative. No micro minis, but a "medium" mini can be fine if you have great legs. |
