SAHMs, do you answer when someone knocks on your door?

If is not someone I recognize or a child then I do a little hand wave wrist flick, like "scram, get outta here".

Tee hee. Like you are flicking away a bug.

This thread is getting funnier and funnier.

How about big "NO SOLICITORS" and "NO TRESPASSING. VIOLATORS WILL BE PROSECUTED" signs?

Well, I don't necesarily answer it but the first thing I do in the morning is open my front door! The storm door is all glass, and has a lock on it which I use! I love the sunlight, live in a safe neighborhood ( although I understand crime happens everywhere) but I refuse to be a prisoner in my own home. I also have a great dog who barks ferociously at strangers. We do get lawn, windows, tree, meat, service, etc. But the dog barks so loudly they go away.

recently, I put a small post it note on the door which says " no solicitors" and have not had a knock since. Once a peddler came through, she called herself that, and asked me for money for something, when I said " no" she asked if she could use my phone for her ride. I said no but that I would happily call the ride for her of she gave ME the number ......she got mad and starting yelling it was because she was black ( I'm white). I said color had nothing to do with it I don't open my door to strangers. That was the wieirdest --- other than the political candidates when you are not voting their party)). But, I still open my door every day. It makes me happy but my mom, and grandmother always did as well!

I wouldn't live in a neighborhood where I wouldn't feel safe answering the door during the daytime. But Herndon is iffy, so in your case, maybe not.

Oh, forgot to say.....neighbors can see me in sweats, no make- up, I don't care. Home is home. I am not going to dress nice and wear make- up in the off chance someone stops by. They know I know how to dress, wear make-up!

You don't have to be quiet. Its your house! Just don't answer. So? Crime happens in the nicest areas because people are looking for crime opportunities. You know that right?

My neighbor got robbed and everyone was absolutely shocked. The thieves made off with a ton of jewelry. Not high ticket, but it added up very quick. Of course the thieves are going to melt it down. Most people I know (myself included) use either a safe deposit box or keep their jewelry somewhere else entirely (their mothers house out of state, or whatever).

I always answer.

Maybe I'm missing something, but I don't think anyone here is suggesting not opening the door for children. Way to jump the shark.

I do not think "jump the shark" means what you think it means.

While I totally agree with you calling out the first PP for an irrelevant post, I have to call you out on a totally inappropriate usage of "jump the shark." It is not even remotely applicable here.

PP, you might want to think again. I'm one of hte early PPs, who doesn't answer because of a prior break-in. I live in CC, MD and not on a secluded corner lot where burglars can easily sneak around. I'm sorry to say that if you live in a major metropolitan area, you are probably at risk of being a victim of burglars yourself. It's overwhelmingly unlikely of course (thankfully) but you are no safer than the OP in Herndon or someone in Gaithersburg. OTOH, I grew up an hour outside of Boston in a town of 10,000 people and my parents still rarely lock the door at all.
