Buying in MoCo - which HS?

Anonymous
Why are you guys razzing on OP? Superintendent "Social Justice Warrior" Starr apparently sends his kids to Burning Tree ES (they'll go on to Whitman). Obama sends his kids to Sidwell Friends.

Why is it okay that some people can present themselves as caring for the poor and want the best for their kids?
Anonymous
I think I know why. Because the OP said they were interested in buying in MoCo, and then listed as the only possible options the four highest income, whitest high schools. If you think about it from the perspective of those of us who live near the 21 other high schools in the county, it is pretty easy to get offended that people are only looking at those four because they "want what's best for their child." Clearly that is what we all want, and it's silly to claim that is only possible at those four schools.

Actually, while I am not a fan of OP, what she said is that they were buying in Bethesda/Potomac and was asking for info on 2 schools. I took that to mean that they had already made a decision about where to buy a house and that they weren't considering Silver Spring or Clarksburg or wherever. The thread went off track when someone came in with an off topic comment about 3 schools that are not in bethesda/potomac and the OP, and others, responded badly to that. That being said, the OP does need to decide if the two schools she is considering are the right ones for her kids, and given that she has said they will not be candidates to take AP classes, I would question the choice to send my kids to either of the schools.

Seriously, re-read your post. Your defensiveness and sense of umbrage is totally misplaced. The OP never claimed it was "only possible" to do "what's best for their child" at these 4 schools. She simply is interested in sending HER child to one of these schools, and wanted feedback.

If you genuinely feel it is justified to be offended because someone has a different school preference, then I assume you are offended by the tens of thousands of people who already live in the Whitman, Churchill, etc, neighborhoods? As well as by the thousands who send their kids to private schools or charter schools or any other school besides your own.

Repeat after me: in America, individuals have the right to decide where they want to live and where they want to send their children to school. You cannot dictate your preferences for everyone else, and declaring that anyone who has different preferences from you is wrong and bad (racist, elitist, etc) is pretty much the opposite of the "diversity" you're touting. And this is coming from a lefty who has kids at a different MoCo school than the OP inquired about, btw.

I think OP deserves that backlash she is getting -- not from the original question -- but from her negative comments regarding Silver Spring/Langley Park and DCC high schools. I think it can be fairly said that all/most parents want what is "best" for their children but she stepped in big pile of poop when she equated/defined "best" (for her children) as Bethesda/Whitman/Churchill, etc. But it seems to me that she eventually got the information she seemed to be looking for -- so maybe the backlash was worthwhile and this thread can rest in peace.

Bigoted, racist OP here. I guess it's ok for the Obamas to send their children to Sidwell? It's ok that THEY want only the best for their children? Or that Clinton too felt felt that Sidwell was the best for Chelsea? And let's not talk about college. I guess all those haters are not striving for their kids to go to the best college they can get into?

Forget I asked the question! I should have known better....and I really thought my question was benign and vanilla. had no idea that it would turn into this.

fight amongst yourselves. Im outta here.....

Please invite "I wouldn't send my dog to public school but MoCo teachers suck and unions suck too" poster. The three of them can spend all day spitting at each other. And the grownups can have a conversation.

Now, I have told you fine ladies numerous times... I am the "wouldn't send my dog to MoCo public schools" but I am NOT the unions suck poster. Therefore, you will be needing to send out an extra invitation.

Serious question: are you the crazy tiger mom as well as "wouldn't send my dog"? Crazy tiger mom has indicated a preference for private schools.

No, I am not her. FWIW, I think she's nuts.

Good to know! You do, however, often up in the same "cut my taxes by cutting MoCo's budget!" place as Teacher Unions Suck poster. Would you care to comment on that?

Perhaps because the thread you are referring to pertained to teacher's raises and included the one teacher that kept whinging about how haaaaarrrrrrd it is to be a teacher.

OP stated she grew up in Langley Park/Silver Spring, so she's basing her opinions on her own knowlege & experience. You may feel different but that doesn't make her opinion less valid. Hell, there have been people on here who slam Wootton, while I'd give my left arm to be able to afford a house in that district. Doesn't mean Wootton sucks, it's an OPINION.

Maybe I do -- but why does that matter? More importantly, I don't know what's best for hers or anyone else's child/ren (and can only hope that I'm making the best decisions/choices for my own). My point was that she -- like all/most parents -- want what is best for her children but the thread seemed to veer way off course when she seemed to reply or adopt comments which suggested otherwise (e.g., parents who send their children to Einstein, Kennedy, and Wheaton do so because they can't make a better/best choice). So PP, please pull your panties out your ass and stop fanning the flames that moved this thread off course.

No, 16:11, YOU pulled the thread way off course by screeching racism when you don't have a clue why OP mentioned some schools not others, or what might be best for OP's kids whom you never met. Stop trying to blame the PP you're arguing with, and stop trying to pin the blame on OP who never endorsed, despite what you say, some of the criticisms of DCC schools posted by others here. In short, stop being a total asshole.

Signed, the liberal mom with 2 kids at Blair (but not the other liberal you've been arguing with)

My high school kid tells us there's a huge difference between AP classes (DD has taken 5 so far, will take 3-4 more next year) and honors classes (DD has taken a few of these too). The AP classes are too intense, and the honors classes are jokes, it almost seems like honors is the new "regular." It's too bad that MoCo doesn't have a happy medium!

MCPS teacher here. This is spot on. Honors classes are now the "on-level" classes (really, if a kid is somewhat responsible and does their homework, they go to honors). On level is basically for the kids who do nothing. AP is for the old honors kids becuase that is what parents and guidance push them to do. They will get great grades in there to "pad" our numbers, but the actual AP tests are the real measure of how "high preforming" these kids really are.

In fact, Health, which is required to graduate, was made "honors" a few years ago. NOTHING about the curriculum really changed, but you can no longer take an on-level health class. It was basically just a name change. So every kid at every MCPS school takes at least one "honors" class. Do you think every kid at every MCPS school is a honors student???

It is all a scam.

It matters. I am not in Churchill or Whitman district. The OP said her kid has ADHD. My kids have similar issues.

It matters when my school looks at my son's mild learning disability and practically laughs in my face when asking for extra help. They have bigger fish to fry.

If I moved to a better district I would get a better education for my child. Plain and simple.

It's not about race/divesity/socioeconomic blah blah blah it is about getting and eduction - one that will prepare kids for a JOB.

I really don't get why it is every about race/diversity/socioeconommic - I have all that in my life - I don't need to stick my kids in a school to teach them this they learn it at home.

Langley Park is in PG County.

Silver Spring is in MoCo.

One has nothing to do with the other, schools-wise, government-wise, or otherwise.
