NP here. My high school kid tells us there's a huge difference between AP classes (DD has taken 5 so far, will take 3-4 more next year) and honors classes (DD has taken a few of these too). The AP classes are too intense, and the honors classes are jokes, it almost seems like honors is the new "regular." It's too bad that MoCo doesn't have a happy medium!
MCPS teacher here. This is spot on. Honors classes are now the "on-level" classes (really, if a kid is somewhat responsible and does their homework, they go to honors). On level is basically for the kids who do nothing. AP is for the old honors kids becuase that is what parents and guidance push them to do. They will get great grades in there to "pad" our numbers, but the actual AP tests are the real measure of how "high preforming" these kids really are. In fact, Health, which is required to graduate, was made "honors" a few years ago. NOTHING about the curriculum really changed, but you can no longer take an on-level health class. It was basically just a name change. So every kid at every MCPS school takes at least one "honors" class. Do you think every kid at every MCPS school is a honors student??? It is all a scam.
