see, here's the problem. No name recognition whatsoever. Apparently it's very good, however, if you major in sculpture or Nursing - Anesthesia.

Hmm, ok, thank you. I do not work in either of those fields so maybe that explains it. Thank you!

Do you people enjoy being such arrogant twits?

Signed, Double-Ivy Graduate Who Has Lived in Real World (where attitude and dedication count for more than degrees).

PP, are you saying that people here are arrogant because they seem to be saying that a college cannot be any good if they have not heard of it? If you are saying that, I agree 100%

DW went to NC State, wonder what she'll think of this assessment.....

NC State is not a shitty national school? of course it is. just like FSU, WVU, Louisville, etc. no shame in that.

In terms of reputation sure, but you can get a good education at any of these if you want to.

NONE of these schools are shitty. There are some state schools that are but these particular schools aren't. You folks are crazy and probably have kids who haven't applied to college yet so you are all still living at Lake Wobegon.

Um... I dunno. US News has N.C. State at #101; Ole Miss at #143; and West Virginia at #164. The latter two, in particular, don't look so hot to me.

Look, I stand by what I said. I am not saying the schools are top notch but here on DCUM everyone is talking like their kids are hot snot and like they have no need for any financial aid. Fact is A LOT of these posters kids are likely headed to some of these so-called "shitty" schools. I know so many parents who had these "brilliant" and "gifted" kids who were all Ivy bound--or at least UVa. They poo poo'd VT as filled with a bunch of farmers and hicks. JMU wasn't even mentioned. Well, when the time came to go to school, some suddenly had a new attitude. Suddenly, JMU was the same as UVa and Christopher Newport was such a great school. And suddenly little Johnny was going to WVU because it offered things that none of the VA schools offered (really--none?). Others got a lot of money to go out of state and that made it equal or even less than instate but those packages were typically to the NC States of the world (not UNC). Those kids were jumping at a chance to avoid attending Tech or UVA with a bunch of their high school classmates.

I am not saying that those schools are the best but I just think it is a bit over the top to call NC State or the like shitty. I recall an attorney at my first firm who went there and then to Harvard law and was a very successful lawyer and very proud of her NC State degree. I say parents should hope for the best for your kids but don't go trashing a bunch of places that might actually be your kids "reach" school rather than his safety and don't trash schools that might recruit a bright kid with a very attractive financial package. I know a Christopher Newport kid who got 100% financial aid and nothing from VT. Well, that kid is going to CNU even though objectively (based on US News rankings), you think he should go to VT. For his family, CNU is the best and obvious choice.

Well said, PP! I am surprised by the number of posters here who are still caught up in where your "piece of paper" came from. At the undergraduate level it matters very little.

Yes, as well as that people here are arrogant when they make negative comments about schools that they have heard of, based on incomplete information.

WVU is probably a good example. Average GPA/SAT scores there aren't very high, so DCUM types have little good to say about it. But part of the reason why the scores aren't high is that the state legislature has insisted that the school open its doors to less polished and disadvantaged students who still want a college education. It doesn't mean that there aren't some excellent opportunities there for motivated students.

My experience is that your work experience is what counts. At my work someone with a masters degree had his resume tossed in the trash because he could not answer technical questions satisfactorily

There are over 2,000 not-for-profit 4 year colleges in this country. Seems like the three you mention are all in the top 10%.

I called NC State and WVU shitty, but I was also the one suggesting those-type schools over decent regional schools nobody has ever heard of. I sent my nephew to WVU over schools like Frostburg, UMBC or Salisbury, and I think it was a fantastic choice.

When I come across resumes for ivy's I will tell you what is really stupid. What is really stupid are the people who go to ivy league schools and graduate with a history or communications degree. Not just stupid because of the degree but REALLY stupid because they wasted all that money to get that type of degree at a very expensive school.

CNU has a really dynamic president right now who is doing a lot to court upper middle class families . He is a Washington and Lee alum and if you've been to visit both campuses, you will see that he is remaking CNU to look like W&L. Right now, it is still something of a no name school, but Elon was no name 15 years ago and has become more an more popular in the northeast and mid Atlantic becaue of active marketing and courting of that population. I suspect CNU will have a similar trajectory.

I always thought you went to an Ivy for the name and the lame degree. They're liberals arts, right? What would be considered a good degre from an Ivy if not history or Enlish? But I really don't know. I went to a 3rd tier school and have always been well employed as an engineer. And even more wll employed when I got my law degree from a schooled ranked 20-25th.

Really? The Ivy's have the best financial aid in the country. Many students who graduate debt free from Harvard, were offered packages at state schools, especially out of state schools that people are suggesting, with significant loans. I'm having trouble seeing Harvard as the stupid choice in that situation.

Plenty of engineers come out of Ivy's, lots of other degrees too.

News to me. Really. When I went to school, Ivys didn't have engineering, which is the opposite of a liberal arts degree.
