We just did a kitchen renovation, approx 300 sq.ft., including knocking down a wall, moving water lines, full power box upgrade, etc. We got quotes, just for labor ranging from $14K to $31K. We went with the $14K and he did an incredible job and used exactly the same drywall and nails that the $30K guy would have used. And since he's got his own business, he was there every day, instead of contracting it out to a bunch of subs, thereby increasing my price.

Please PP - can you share the contractor's name?!

Its Chaim Cohen http://www.jamesbondconstruction.com/. He's awesome. He did a full kitchen remodel - total demolition - in less than 4 weeks (would have been faster but the cabinets were delayed).

You get what you pay for.

your friend got ripped off too. $175/sf tops.

I agree. Not an addition, but I paid $30k about five years ago for a completely renovated kitchen (new cabinets, tile floors, appliances, Corian countertops -- very nice finishes), basic rebuilding of everything from basement to roof except for exterior walls including new floor joists on first and second floor, completely new bathroom (basic white tile), new two story porch, all new electric, new track lighting, all new plumbing, roof repairs etc etc. It's been more than five years and NOTHING is falling apart, floors are level, house still looks great.
