Why you should never ever go to Baltimore

Anonymous
Are you saying that what happened to me there and my BF and his neighbor is not true? Are you calling me a liar? I lived downtown too - a few blocks from the harbor - not even on the west side beyond MLK. Perhaps YOU are sheltered or just ignorant - I don't know, but I don't care either. It is what it is. I forgot to mention that every panel on my car, in a 3 year period, ending up being replaced from people hitting it (except the roof panel). And my parking garage caught on fire too (but my car didn't get burned - just broken into a FEW times).

Really? I lived on the west side beyond MLK (not far beyond, in Pigtown/Washington Village) and I did not have one tiny bit of an issue with crime. Our neighbors' house was broken into once, I think. That's it. I walked to and from work and school; I did legal clinic work with people on the real west side. I got rear-ended once in the 4 years I lived there. My neighbors were not the richest people in the world, but they were for the most part good, kind, welcoming people. I can't say that what you described didn't happen, but it really doesn't jive with my experiences at all.

I was born and raised in Baltimore, my parents were born and raised in Baltimore and my grandparents were born and raised in Baltimore. In the city. I'm not saying that Baltimore is perfect but there are nice parts to it. Yes, there are bad parts and I have spent plenty of time in the bad parts--I went to high school in the inner city in one of the most "dangerous" neighborhoods of Baltimore. And was NEVER assaulted, robbed, etc. in all of those years.

Not I, nor anyone in my family, have ever been a victim of crime in Baltimore. It wasn't until I moved here that I had my car stolen (in Friendship Heights, no less). Point is, crime can happen, and does happen, anywhere. Based on my personal experience, Chevy Chase is the most dangerous place I've ever lived

Oh please, there are lots of "ghetto" neighborhoods where you will be just fine. I live in one in DC and they're really not as scary as you think.

Do you have kids?
Yes, raised one there! She is doing well, thank you.

I was just at a hospital up in Baltimore visiting a friend, and every single one of us visiting her commented on how friendly everyone at the hospital was-from the parking attendant to the security guard, to the nurses and random people we ran into in the elevator.

Does this happen in Miami?

Las Vegas?

New Orleans?

Amsterdam?

Paris?

LA?

Chicago?

Brooklyn?

DC?

Dallas?

Rio?

GO! Tell me about it.

I've lived in a few of these cities and grew up in Baltimore, if you think that crime is a "baltimore specific" problem you are just silly. Crime is an urban thing. If you've been in any city, anywhere in the world, you know there are good parts and bad parts. You know where to go for fancy shopping and where to clutch your purse close.

Cities are the same EVERYWHERE from New Dehli to Buenos Aries to Baltimore to LA to London.

Only the uneducated or untraveled would post like this (OP). I assume you are one or the other.

Snicker. If you think Delhi is the same as Buenos Aires, you've clearly never been to both.

I love Baltimore (go Ravens, go Orioles), but the crime there sucks and it is harder to avoid than in "urban" areas of DC metro. I lived just west of MLK while in law school at UMD, had my car stolen, roommates were mugged, dead body in our alley, house broken into while we were home, etc. Not good. Still love B'more, just wouldn't live there. If I had a good job there I would live in Ellicott City.

Well I am a waspy white girl and I lived in Baltimore for 4 years - worked downtown for a year and then went to Maryland law school downtown. I walked around during the day all the time, was way more cautius at night but, hell I am way more cautious at night in my pricey NWDC neighborhood too. I loved Baltimore. It has character. Lots of nice people live there. Interesting people live there. Sometimes it feels like you are in a time warp in Baltimore.

Bullshit. I lived in Brooklyn

...and have you LIVED in Baltimore? Horrible, horrible crime-infested town.

My sister lived on Notorious B.I.G.'s block, I spent a lot of time there and she hung with me in Baltimore, and even she was like OMG Baltimore wins the ghetto prize. I didn't seem to notice any piles of sand soaking up blood on the sidewalk anywhere in Brooklyn or nightly shootings when I was there. Did people die regularly on your block? Do you know what type of gun is used when it goes off? Do you know when somebody who got shot is dead because of the vehicles parked at the scene? Did you have to kick heroin addicts off your porch in the morning? Did you have to get tight with straight up street people for protection? Did you have to set up a makeshift home alarm system by piling loud stuff against your door so that when people tried to open it (ALL THE TIME) they would get startled and run? Ever get caught up in a riot after the police killed somebody next to you? Do pawn shops in your neighborhood have pit bulls behind the counter and sell gold teeth (like, a freaking tooth - with gold on it)?

I have lived in Baltimore for twenty years and never had any of these experiences. You must have lived in some drug ridden poor section of the city. Ands yes, similarly poor neighborhoods exist in all major cities including dc.

Yes, jeez louise, where did you live? I've lived in the city for 15 years... 15 uneventful years. My neighbors are nice. Sometimes there's crime in the neighborhood. It hasn't happened to me so far, knock wood. There are no piles of sawdust soaking up the blood (!!!!!!!). or heroin addicts on our porch.

For perspective, the houses in our neck of the wood cost <$100k, so definitely not a wealthy part of the city! Just a place where normal lower-to-middle-class working families live.

You haven't been to Detroit outside of downtown.

And blaming the victim for being drunk? That's just obnoxious. Being drunk doesn't give people the right to take your sh&t and strip you.

No, but I bet you money that he won't ever drink to much and walk around a neighborhood he doesn't know again.

So if a woman got raped that would be ok cause she drank too much?

Another white girl that lived in Baltimore for three years and loved it! I lived in Federal Hill just three doors down from *The Poor Black People in the PROJECTS*!!!! Not once was my car damaged, home broken into, or physically assaulted. My neighbors were kind. They looked out for me. I would move back in a second.
