I was the only single woman living in my suburban 'hood for a long time. I got to know a few people - my immediate neighbors - and they were nice. But it took having my daughter to really feel like I was part of the community. Once we were outside walking every night, going to the park, etc., we connected more with other families with kids and people with dogs. You need to be secure in your decision - just tell people, "we figured we might as well get settled before we have the kids." I have plenty of friends who have done this, by the way - not everyone is interested in living in the city, with or without kids.
