I will come straight out and say it:
I find toenail polish to be gaudy. Unnecessary and gaudy. Fingernail polish maybe not quite so, but I honestly prefer buffed, natural nails all around. Not even a French manicure which to me screams "stripper." |
The best are the 2 inch long fingernails. My personal fave are the ones with designs and 'diamonds' on the nails.
I always do a clear/ light pink on the nails, and a slightly darker pink for my toenails, and they always look good. For those concerned about fungus, make sure the place cleans and disinfects the tubs and equipment, or bring your own. As long as the nails are trimmed and clean, it doesn't matter what people do with their nails, but what is up with all the older women sporting the black polish...still? Everytime I am getting a pedicure, there is at least one or two people wha want the dark colors. |
I never get pedicures, because of the fungus/Hep B/HIV/drug-resistant-staph risks. And I rarely if ever paint my toenails, because I don't think the chemicals in either the polish or the remover are good for you.
BUT. I would never wear open toed shoes to work, a social event, or anyplace nice. Frankly, even if someone has nailpolish on their toes, I think it is unprofessional, immature, and tacky for women to wear open toed shoes to work. It makes me shudder whenever I see it in the elevator. I have noticed that it is always the young associates that do it - none of my fellow Biglaw partners would ever be caught dead with their toes hanging out at work. |
I never wear open-toe shoes of any sort without a fresh pedicure..every 3-4weeks Minimum. Stretch it to 6 weeks in winter when feet are under wraps.
Many men over the years have noted that u can easily tell how well-groomed/maintained a woman's v-jay is by looking at her toes. Prob true ![]() |
Are so many posters really saying that a woman's toes look bad unless there is nail polish on them? If the nails are trimmed and well groomed, what's the problem? This just makes me so sad, and makes me fear for what my toddler daughter is going to be facing.
(And, sorry, but another perspective might be that painting "pretty colors" on your TOES is a little childish.) |
Same here. |
Who cares what other people do with their toe nails. When I spend time with people, I look at their FACES, not at their feet. |
So glad I don't work in BigLaw. Sounds entirely unpleasant. |
I love toe nail polish! I have it all the time. But I am jealous when I see perfect shaped clear toenails. |
I say to myself I don't WANT to care about silly things like toenail polish and groomed feet, but I feel so much happier with fresh polish, exfoliated feet, and shaved legs. Just looks so much prettier and better. I give myself at home pedis most of the time... don't like going to salons.
I don't have fungus but my the nails of my big toes don't look too pretty unpolished. Also I always look at other women's feet, but I don't judge the owners of the feet as harshly as others posting here. |
Pretty much all of this. Plus, I can't imagine spending the mental energy judging other women so harshly. It's like they're looking for reasons... |
I got terrible fungus from getting so many pedicures, but I got rid of it without seeing a doctor. A google search turned up a lengthy post on the Berkeley Parents Forum with home remedies. I cut off as much of the nail as I could. Then I filed the whole nail down (on the top) with a new file, that I didn't use for any other toe. Every morning, I put full strength tea tree oil over the entire nail and skin, and as much under nail as I could. You can't miss a single day, and I carried it on vacations. Occasionally, I would wipe apple cider vinegar over it, usually in evenings (the posts said that many people soak in it once a week). I have to say that last summer I felt really goofy having naked toes, but I just couldn't stand it any longer. About 8 months or so later it was grown out and fungus hadn't returned. I still wipe with tea tree/lavender oil daily. I only do home pedicures now because I don't want to go through that again. Haven't painted my nails yet, but will do so as soon as I can order some toxic free polish. |
There's nothing gross or uncouth about unpainted toenails, but it is interesting to me that's it's become de rigeur, even among women who don't wear make-up and aren't really into clothes. I think it's just a fun way to have a little color in your life, which is the same way I think about make-up and fashion. |

Second poster nailed it - so to speak. |
