Unpainted toe-nails like going out in your underwear?

Would I be a dork if I admitted that I wear my socks and sandals out in public a lot? My DH says I look really geeky. Would that be better or worse than painting my nails?

Where do you live? Just curious!

how many people are going around staring at people's toes anyway? i prefer to look at people's faces, personally.

So weird that people have such strident opinions about whether strangers polish their nails! People really care that much about other people's TOES? I sure don't. I personally don't wear open-toed shoes without polish, but that's just because I love both manicures and pedicures. Those are luxuries and purely a matter of taste, though. Some people just don't like it and I certainly don't think it's "gross" to have unpainted toenails.

I also don't think painted/unpainted nails are a measure of "class" (whatever that means). While I do agree that current fashion means that long or bright nails look gauche nowadays, I think that for women of my generation (late 20s, early 30s), short dark (or even short red) nails can be quite sophisticated.

As with any style, people should do what they like, choose what looks good on them, and they will look just fine.

It takes 5 minutes to slap on some toenail polish.

And yes, I think it's dorky to wear socks and sandals. And way worse than the no polishing thing...

I'm pregnant and am not about to get a pedicure -- going to a communal place to get some stranger to wash your feet in the same tub used by tons of other people (unknown how many of them have foot fungus) is just gross. Why also should I feel the pressure to apply a polish made out of who knows what chemicals (generated as part of some surely environmentally unfriendly process) to my body just to make other people happy? It is easy to keep your nails trim and well manicured without the use of chemicals or polishes. I buff them instead of polish.

I'm not even going to bother reading the responses to this before responding: its a crazy comment and comparison. And it was rude and tacky of that woman to make the comment to you!

I give myself polish free pedicures all the time, there is no rough, dead, crust on my heals, and my nails are clean and trimmed. I think my feet look good, and that's about all that matters, no one is going to change how I feel, as I am pretty happy with things the way they are.

I often see women on the Metro heading to work at the library of congress or someplace in the hippie sandals with these natural toenails, carrying a canvas bag advertising the local public television station. I think to myselves -- she's a really great person, I'm sure -- probably recycles, spays and neuters, composts, supports WETA but man, get a pedicure already or cover up those hoofs!

OMG I love you... thank you for the much needed laugh today!

I personally prefer unpolished toes, (that are clean and groomed). The natural look. Most models are natural, un-polished. I guess painted nails helps cover up 'ugly' toes and feet. But, if your toes are nice, why slap a coat of disgusting purple or tacky green color on them? Then 3 days later it's all chipped and gross. Nothing like natural or subtle clear for a classy, sexy, supermodel look!!

You're probably one who has to go every two weeks b/c you suffer from foot fungus.

So yes, for you - GROSS!

I enjoy painting my toenails (and they are bright purple right now). I can't stand chipped polish on my fingernails, so my toenails are the girliest part of my appearance. I tend to my feet while watching chick flicks or other mindless television.

However, I think it is completely fine to wear sandals with bare nails. I think my feet would look fine naked, and that was how they were for most of the first 30 years of my life.

FYI: If your toenails are thick and yellowed, see a doctor. It is probably caused by a fungus, which is difficult to get rid of. My husband is (finally) treating his toenail fungus infection: lasers, medicines, an ultraviolet light for his shoes.... But I'm looking forward to him being able to wear sandals (Tevas) without looking at his disgusting, yellow nails. It takes a year to grow out the yucky nails.

OP: as for the person who told you that it was indecent to wear open toe shoes without polish, I think I'd ask her what decade she was living in.

Yeah, I've got the Orc feet that make everyone recoil in disgust. But probably have a pedicure once every two years. The last pedicurist grimaced as if in pain when I decloaked my claws of mass revulsion. Last year I bought a pair of leather mules that completely cover my toes -- problem solved.

This post made me laugh out loud. I remember those ladies from my days commuting on the Metro. Hilarious! Thanks, PP!!

When I see a woman wearing colored toenail polish, I think white trash.
