Quaker pacifism is based in the belief that there is "that of God in every person". If the people on the other side of a disagreement have God in them as much as the people on your side, you can't go killing them. The goal is to work out differences in nonviolent ways. That said, Quaker Meetings don't insist that everyone believe the same thing - there is no dogma. During the Vietnam war (when I was growing up) there were plenty of members of Friends Meeting of Washington who were also in the military, and struggling with what they believed. Not so sure about Quaker ministers in the military though - I think that would be a stretch for most Quakers. |
Looks like many posters on this thread were pretty good at guessing where you might be comfortable! |
I think Unitarians and Universalists were two different theologies that merged at some point. IMHO Unitarians tend to be really liberal. Pro-peace, pro-environment, pro-immigrant, pro-poor, pro-women's lib. At my congregation the parking lot is full of hybrids with Obama stickers ![]() |
Unitarians are the same as Unitarian Universalists. They used to be two different denominations that merged in the 1950s or 1950s. There aren't many UUs, but many of the religiously-oriented threads here (that aren't bashing others beliefs) are people looking for a spiritual home who don't think of themselves as religious. UU congregations are a good fit for that, so you have a lot of posters (like me) chiming in to recommend checking out Unitarian Universalism. |
