It's so strange when pull out their spouse as the absolute and final authority on all matters. It's not just you, it happens all the time on DCUM (and I'm sure on other forums and in person).

"My husband is Mexican and he says there's no such food as _____ in all of Latin America!!!"
And so on.

DH and I are of 2 different cultures that are minorities in the US. When people talk about my culture, I don't post "Well I'm ___ and that's ridiculous, none of my people do that!" and when my husband's culture comes up, I don't ask for his opinion and then post it as if it's the opinion. I am not the representative for everyone who looks like me and neither are your husbands and wives.

Well, Joseph Smith was a con artist, went to jail numerous times (that's where he died from people who were pissed off that he conned them). After failing in a few endeavors, he started having "revelations" - you must give me your money, I'm having affairs so I just had a "revelation" that god wants men to have plural wives, etc. So yeah, the whole Mormon thing was started by a philanderer, con artist convict. It was an analogy. As in not the exact same thing.

Maybe it is the opinion when you personally only know or associate with one person or very few of a certain category. Kinda like stereotypes.

That may be true for some people, but that's not a good excuse. I am only close with one person of X racial group, but I still do not take her opinions or way of doing things as the way all X people think and do things.

Oh for Pete's sake - I'm the one who wrote the post above. Let me clarify - I was not writing for any other black person - only for my husband "HE thinks it's a joke" - those were his actual words. He is no more an authority than anyone else would be, but that is his opinion. I am sure there are plenty of AA that celebrate Kwanzaa. I can't speak to that. My DH doesn't and he does think it's a joke - his words. That was truly my only point. I certainly wasn't typing that as therefore it must be true for everyone - if you thought that, then you read waaay too much into things.
