Private & Independent Schools
|
Hardly jealous. I have a 5,000 sq ft house and a 5 minute commute with best schools in nation for my kids.
Not everyone works in DC. Lots of cash outside the beltway. |
Not so nice.... |
Best schools? I bet the top 10 DC privates are better than any public in the burbs. |

I've noticed several posts where families are comparing their annual daycare costs to private school costs. As a fair warning and a "heads-up" - I wanted to point out that daycare normally covers full year (including summer) a full day (7-6pm) while private school tuition covers a school year and school day. Presuming you are working families - you will need to pay additional fees for aftercare (most schools get out at 3/3:30 and some even at 2:30) and for summer care...and to cover 2week holiday break, february break, spring break etc. It is a bit of a shock, so I wanted to bring that up.
Good Luck! |

Enough with the city vs not debate - or I have money and you don't - or private vs public. This is all a classic example of not respecting that different people make different choices based on their needs, desires etc. Can't you just live your own life happily and let others do the same.
And whoever thinks DCUrbanmoms is just for people who live in certain parts of DC proper - you are crazy. DCUM is a community of the DC metro area - there are plenty of people represented who live in Arlington, Alexandria, Fairfax, Montgomery and PG counties. Heck - I have even seen Loudon County. It is meant as a resource for us all to share and HELP one another - not to anonymously be a jerk. And for those who think private is a waste - that may not be the case for certain children who would not thrive in public for whatever reason. There ARE families who choose private to do best by their child - at the recommendation of teachers and professionals. And there are those who choose private for one child and public for another. So keep that in mind when making vast statements either way. |
Why would you be jealous? Not everyone has the bad taste to buy a tacky McMansion out in the burbs. |

HHI is $124k, mortgage is $1800, private school tuition is $25k. Only one child, no FA.
For us, it's priorities and only one child, but everyone has different circumstances. Make the decision that is right for you. Best wishes. |
I did not want to raise my children in dupont. You don't find many older kids being raised there. Most flee when kids finish preschool. Anti-black---WTF?! Fenty isn't black? I don't know how anyone wishing to reform dc schools could have voted for Gray in the primaries. He is a crook. |
| Back to the OP's question: DC dwellers, HHI $450K, 2 working parents, 3 kids, no FA, @$90k tuition (ouch). |
| I am a single parent with HHI about 110K( no child support) and a mortgage, we live in DC so Private or move were our only options( no, we didn't make the lottery at Cap City or El Haines)So, I work 2-3 jobs, live on PB and we get FA. I gave up every single item from my personal budget. Best money I have ever spent and I wouldn't change a thing. |
hear hear there's a very good reason why property is vastly more expensive in NW DC (west of RCP) than any other area in the region. |
| 330k, 5000 mortgage, tuition ~65k |
This sounds like us. But so far just two tuitions cause I am pregnant with number three. pp, do you mind saying how much your mortgage is? We are considering moving to a bigger house but the mortgage would be over 6k. And I am worried that is too much, given the three tuitions. |
| HHI $450k, mortgage $4200, 2 kids but only 1 private tuition so far at $30k, only DH works so no additional afterschool childcare expenses, and we support elderly parents and grandparents. |
maybe all the suburbanites should come live next to you, so they can be just like you and you guys can be friends forever and ever. |
