Racial incidents at Thoreau?

Reads like a lot of people don't realize or are slowly learning that anyone of any race or any ethnicity can be racist and/or bigoted.

Your statement is factually incorrect as to racism. You need to educate yourself.

I believe research shows that I'm totally correct. Explain how you see it differently and what basis there is for the alternate view?

White people can be racist. Yes, absolutely.

Umm.. my kid says they hear all sorts of racial language at school and most of the time it's NOT the white kids doing it. Its usually the POC kids to the other POC kids.

Sorry not sorry. My kid has had an item in his hand, a child of color demanded he give it up, and then when he wouldn’t give the item up, the child of color was screaming “oh it’s because I’m black”. Then tells the administration my child and friends are racist.

DP with kids in this pyramid. It is most likely POC kids. I've witnessed it. That being said, it's usually a small group of kids that do this and cause most of the problems in the school doing stupid stuff and that group will be a couple of kids from different races including a few white kids. I've been surprised by how kind the majority of kids are to each other these days, but middle schoolers do some crazy stuff. The swastika stuff has been going on for years.

Did you watch the video? Every time someone brings up something, people always fall back to how black kids use the N word. First, I don't care one bit if some people get to say a word that is off limits for others. But regardless, that's not what this is. This is awful, and I would really like to understand how Thoreau is responding.

Two serious allegations here:
1. Racial slurs
2. Assault (pouring water on hair)

Question:
Did mom give names to principal? If yes, did principal address the perps?
If she did not give names, then why not?

I would also ask her if her son ever uses racial slurs regarding others. That does not excuse the behavior of others, but it could be a contributing factor.

What would she like the principal to do?

Pouring water on hair is not assault.

When you keep calling every bit of a$sholery something bigger like "assault" you trivialize and minimize actual assault.

The water thing is ignorant, rude and nasty, but it's not assault.

You don't know the definition of words it seems.

"Assault is generally defined as an intentional act that puts someone in reasonable fear or apprehension of immediate bodily harm."

And, from Merriam-Webster:
2
law
a
: a threat or attempt to inflict offensive physical contact or bodily harm on a person (as by lifting a fist in a threatening manner) that puts the person in immediate danger of or in apprehension (see apprehension sense 1) of such harm or contact

Another parent came forward. As a Thoreau parent, I'm disgusted and deeply concerned. I'm beginning to think this school or even the whole area is not a good place for my family in a racial minority. I don't trust the school or FCPS to correct the situation before my younger kids start at Thoreau.

Wow. Has the school responded to any of this?

No. They don't. You do.

It’s going to be horrible for students joining as 7th graders. They’ve had nothing to do with this, and they will be subjected to endless social emotional learning lessons.

Yes it seems, at least based on the link to the article provided.

I think Thoreau needs to figure out quickly what it can say publicly about the consequences to students found to have engaged in bullying.

Whether it falls into a political scientist’s definition of “racism” is largely besides the point. Families deserve a school where their kids will not be bullied or harassed for their differences.

Ugh, don't Thoreau kids go to Oakton. Yet another reason I want my kids to go to Skyview and not Oakton.

I checked the demographics of the schools my kids would be attending and chose schools where caucasians are not a super majority.

Most Thoreau kids go to Madison. Much smaller numbers go to Oakton and Marshall. The school itself lies in an area zoned to Marshall.

And it's not like Carson hasn't had bad publicity from time to time.

White kids account for 52% of Thoreau's enrollment. A "super majority" typically would connote something at least over 60%.
