Racial incidents at Thoreau?

We are in the process of buying a house in this district and not happy to see this. Is is really as bad as this makes it seem?

Umm.. my kid says they hear all sorts of racial language at school and most of the time it's NOT the white kids doing it. Its usually the POC kids to the other POC kids.

Thoreau is a bit more diverse than Madison, but Madison is the whitest high school in FCPS. So it's unlikely that the Thoreau family is complaining about racist behavior by other Black kids.

My kid at Carson says he hears racist language at school, we don’t ask who is saying it but remind him that is inappropriate and unacceptable. Kids are testing boundaries and repeating what they hear in music and in the media that they watch, a fair amount of that includes racist language. Listen to rap and watch some of the popular you tube channels, you hear it all the time.

It is not an easy conversation to have. Yes, these people are paid a lot of money and are using the N word but you shouldn’t for all these reasons. Yes, it feels strange that some people use the N word but you don’t because there is a different context with a black person using it than a white person. Then again, we were having this same conversation in the 80’s as rap music was going more mainstream and more kids were using racist language because they were hearing it in their music and watching the videos on MTV.

Not a new problem.

+1! The nbc story is awful. Girls poured water on this black boys hair to see what would happen to black hair when it got wet. Other students called him the N word.

My white kid complains to me about the racist and anti-Semitic language at Thoreau. It’s frequent and pervasive. Parents whose kids are telling you that it’s the POC kids, your kids are lying to you. Apparently, they have discussions and warnings, but there don’t seem to be real consequences for racist or anti-Semitic behavior.

DP with kids in this pyramid. It is most likely POC kids. I've witnessed it. That being said, it's usually a small group of kids that do this and cause most of the problems in the school doing stupid stuff and that group will be a couple of kids from different races including a few white kids. I've been surprised by how kind the majority of kids are to each other these days, but middle schoolers do some crazy stuff. The swastika stuff has been going on for years.

Madison has a reputation for being white, preppy, and sports centric. Haven’t heard about racist incidents.

And if you think your child would never....you may be wrong. My daughter has told us about how a really nice boy in our neighborhood from a great family (really nice, kind parents) says the foulest things on the bus and his parents clearly have no idea.
