Racial incidents at Thoreau?

DP with kids in this pyramid. It is most likely POC kids. I've witnessed it. That being said, it's usually a small group of kids that do this and cause most of the problems in the school doing stupid stuff and that group will be a couple of kids from different races including a few white kids. I've been surprised by how kind the majority of kids are to each other these days, but middle schoolers do some crazy stuff. The swastika stuff has been going on for years.

Did you watch the video? Every time someone brings up something, people always fall back to how black kids use the N word. First, I don't care one bit if some people get to say a word that is off limits for others. But regardless, that's not what this is. This is awful, and I would really like to understand how Thoreau is responding.

Keep telling yourself that. It's not just one race of kids, it's basically a huge number of middle school boys of any race. I think we can all agree that middle school boys in general don't make good choices. Even yours.

And yet the article posted by OP refers to a specific incident at Thoreau where a group of middle school girls (race unidentified) poured water on a Black boy's hair to see how it would react when wet.

So perhaps there are some middle school girls, including yours, who haven't been making good choices.

Two serious allegations here:
1. Racial slurs
2. Assault (pouring water on hair)

Question:
Did mom give names to principal? If yes, did principal address the perps?
If she did not give names, then why not?

I would also ask her if her son ever uses racial slurs regarding others. That does not excuse the behavior of others, but it could be a contributing factor.

What would she like the principal to do?

Absolutely, girls can behave like this too. I was specifically referring to boys though.

Yes, and the obvious stupidity of your post was called out.

White people can be racist. Yes, absolutely.

Umm.. my kid says they hear all sorts of racial language at school and most of the time it's NOT the white kids doing it. Its usually the POC kids to the other POC kids.

Same, that’s where it is primarily occurring

If this is what you’re hearing from your kids, it’s probably because they are using racist language. My kid (and friends) at Thoreau tell me they hear racist and anti-Semitic language from white kids. I don’t know why your kid would be lying to you about it except to cover up their behavior.

You don't know it's white kids. You are making assumptions. My MS kid says indians, asians, and Hispanics hurl racial insults at each other all the time. Middle eastern kids bully jewish kids too. Its not just the white kids

The original article is about racism against a black child. Are the non-black POC saying racial slurs to black kids? Cause my moneys on the racist white kids learning from their parents. #trumps America

In our MS, yes. But for this specific case, we are not told, however your assumption that only white kids do this is very incorrect and you must not be familiar with how ms kids operate. Maybe stop thinking about politics all the time?

My kids are at Madison and I can’t tell you how many times I have heard them use the n word, make comments about the Jews, or other racist language between themselves or their friends. We don’t tolerate it at home but it is so pervasive in their peers I feel like I can’t stop it. From what I could gather it seems the kids are fed up with FCPS forcing them to accept everyone that it’s their way to push back. It’s awful, I hope this language and attitude doesn’t stay with them as adults. I’m not sure lessons at school about history and or acceptance will help, seems to push these kids more towards unacceptance.

How exactly is FCPS doing this? By asking that everyone be treated with respect?Because of a few non-Christian holidays? This is disgusting and I'm so glad my kids don't go to Madison.

This is consistent with what my kid at Thoreau hears and sees. I’m not sure how we teach kids to want to be decent people and to feel empathy for others. It makes me sick that kids who have so many advantages and are starting life on 3rd base feel persecuted because they’re expected to treat others with respect.
