Who the heck picks Pomona over Yale and Brown? |
| Selective governor’s school plus independent endeavors |
We know a kid who picked it over Harvard and Stanford. Not everyone wants to go to the highest rank school just for name. |
| Volunteered about 20 hours a week at a camp for poor kids. That was after failing to get even a minimum wage job. Also practiced SATs and improved score to 1580. (Did mediocre on first run through because he's actually passionate about math and really wanted to get that problem he couldn't figure out for 15 minutes, which is a good quality for a mathemetician, but not a good strategy when taking a standardized test.) |
Not my kid, but I know a kid going to a top 10 U who also scooped ice cream last summer. |
Pomona has quite a few kids like that. The campus vibe leans unpretentious intellectual + California chill. |

Paid internship 4 weeks
Construction weekends |
| Competitive paid internship, drafted personal statement, attended conference related to intended major. |
Great experience. Much more impressive than some phony BS. If the kid is bringing it academically (which I assume they were) it shows a great human being who can adapt to lots of different situations, which will serve them well in life. |
| Served as a hostess at a restaurant down the street from the house. Worked about 20-25 hours per week and began work on her essays and apps. Accepted to Brown, Princeton, NW and WashU. |
| WASP: instrument and athletics activities, research for IB EE essay, took required course in summer school to open up enough elective space to take orchestra senior year. |
| Swarthmore and Pomona arent Ivy plus like the others. |
| Camp counselor in training. Made like $5/hour but it’s a camp my kid went to for years. |
"Ivy+/WASP accepts: what did they do summer before senior year? " Your statement, while true, is irrelevant to the topic posted as the OP explicitly included WASP. |
My DC is interested in this area as well. Can you name the organization? |
