We know a kid who picked it over Harvard and Stanford. Not everyone wants to go to the highest rank school just for name.

Volunteered about 20 hours a week at a camp for poor kids. That was after failing to get even a minimum wage job. Also practiced SATs and improved score to 1580. (Did mediocre on first run through because he's actually passionate about math and really wanted to get that problem he couldn't figure out for 15 minutes, which is a good quality for a mathemetician, but not a good strategy when taking a standardized test.)

Pomona has quite a few kids like that. The campus vibe leans unpretentious intellectual + California chill.

Great experience. Much more impressive than some phony BS. If the kid is bringing it academically (which I assume they were) it shows a great human being who can adapt to lots of different situations, which will serve them well in life.

Served as a hostess at a restaurant down the street from the house. Worked about 20-25 hours per week and began work on her essays and apps. Accepted to Brown, Princeton, NW and WashU.

WASP: instrument and athletics activities, research for IB EE essay, took required course in summer school to open up enough elective space to take orchestra senior year.
