Who is getting jobs?

My son is in the same boat, PP (also at a too LAC). Keep in mind that most people choosing to reply to this thread will be those whose kids have internships/jobs (meaning there are many whose kids don’t who aren’t going to reply). Also the replies seem to be skewing stem-heavy and my kid like yours is a humanities major. I do hear that the alumni network is very strong at LACs so I have advised my kid to start cold-emailing alums in his desired field and ask for informational interviews.

What’s her race?

Being a military officer is not terrible.

Congrats! Did he graduate from an academy? One of the benefits of being an Officer is having a good job even in downward economic times.

The two kids I know with jobs graduated from Michigan and Yale, are going into finance, and have strong family/prep school networks. One worked there as an intern, the other I think got the job through family connections.

There are plenty of people posting here who weren't CS majors or even STEM at all.

Once stock goes up, they will rehire.. then fire again.

AI is not replacing that many workers at this pace. The reason for the layoffs is mostly due to budget issues, and the fact that companies like Meta are trying to pour money into their AI product and data centers.

Not worried (yet) about AI replacing workers right now. But, workers will need to know how to use AI in their jobs.

This, AI is an excuse. They hire and fire all the time. They usually cherry pick off the highest paid then go for the new low paid, then burn them out and fire them.

He is into embedded systems and designs and programs hardware for robotic machinery they are developing. Will continue after graduation working 1/2 remote and 1/2 from Berkeley. Has stock options and is one the first 2 employees so he’s very excited. Initially was contacted about the position from one of the founders after seeing his personal website/portfolio and GitHub.

You know most start ups fail.. Good for him but they were also desperate for anyone.

Mine is going into the Peace Corps. Technically a “volunteer” job I guess but he’ll be self sustaining and working in his general field of interest.

The job market for web programmers is terrible - over supply. The job market for CS students who took the rigorous upper level CS electives remains good.

Separately, some here don't realize that Amazon intentionally has a big layoff every single year -- regardless of their profit or the overall economy.

Also some of the stem ppl here are mechanical and civil engineers. That’s very different from cs and and a different, healthier job market especially if one wants to relocate.

Or, multiple times a year. If you make it 2-4 years you are lucky, some make it 6-8 but if you do it sucks out your soul.

He interned the prior two summers doing software development work at my company (that probably helped too) but he wanted to do something in his field this summer.

Whoa, is this your son?
