Yes, a likely letter is 99+% a yes. Columbia is an amazing school (my DS is a current student).

Thank you! (and I like to hear that your kid loves the school!!)

The acceptance email is really great- it's a beautiful video of campus with the fight song playing (Roar Lions Roar) . . so excited for your student

At least it’s tomorrow. Duke is next week (31st).

For what it's worth, last year we knew two boys who got rejected across the Ivies, only to get admitted to Stanford (both of them) and Duke (both of them). They were very similar: both mega achievers but kind of generic/packaged and a little smug going into the process.

Generic and smug is Duke’s brand.

The Ivies will always prioritize legacies. They are the ones that came up with the concept (in order to keep out jews and catholics). I have a lot of respect for JHU, MIT, Amherst, Pomona and other schools that have decided not to give consideration to legacies.

What if you are a legacy who isn't involved and have not even donated one penny? Is that still a hook?

Yes, but it depends on the overall application

Wow... that really makes me wonder if the Ivies picked up on something in their applications but then Stanford and Duke saw the same thing in a positive way?

It matters less in RD, the legacy card is best played in ED/REA

Me too! Lucky my kid won’t be home until right before decisions because my acting is not so great…

And increasingly, say at Harvard, it doesn't matter much if the legacy isn't very involved, a celebrity, or uber-wealthy. Usually deferred SCEA, waitlisted or rejected RD.
