The only POTUS who balanced the budget in the 50 years was Clinton. W burned through the budget surplus he inherited on the most recent ill-advised ME war. |

First of all, the GOP is not in charge of the whole ball of wax. Could the GOP end Social Security and Medicare if they wanted to? No they could not. In fact, over 70% of the federal budget is mandatory spending. I think it's actually more like 83% today, but whatever. So let's not act like there isn't a metric sh** ton of blame to go around. The entitlements are on autopilot and health care is sucking up all the oxygen in the room. Bill Clinton did not balance the budget. That was Newt Gingrich holding his f'n head underwater in between him banging Monica Lewinski. Bill constantly complained about the cutbacks. We have a govt today that does too much that it isn't supposed to and does damn little of what it is supposed to. Been that way for several decades. We should throw more money at it? HELL NO. |

I wish folks would stop throwing out the word entitlement to describe social security as if it’s a dirty word. When you receive your paycheck is it a dirty entitlement. Or if you collect your insurance that you or someone else paid premiums is that an entitlement. How about when you purchase an annuity, is it an entitlement to receive payments or an investment? Stop using social security as a punching bag as if people did not rightfully earn that money. Reagan started that nonsense by signing a bill to raid the social security fund to pay regular government expenditures to fill the gap after hus trickle down economics tax cut. Still, Social security healthy and with a surplus until George W. decided to steal, some say borrow I say steal, 1.4 trillion dollars to fund his idiotic war and give the rich a tax cut. That money has never been returned to the social security fund. Had this theft not occurred, ordinary people who worked every day and put their money into social security in expectation of an annuity at end of life would not be looked at disparaging by people like PP. |

Social security paid for itself until the Republican Congress passed a bill for a Republican potus to commingle the funds into the general fund to pay for tax cuts and wars. Replace social security back into its own separate account and it will survive, that is as long as it’s not pilfered over and over. Medicare is 13-16% of the budget. However, 14% of the US budget is interest payments for money borrowed to pay for such things like wars and $250-million dollar ICE advertisements. |
