Michigan EA

Lucky kids! Mine got in EA last year, but the wait through January was so long! Congrats & Go Blue!

I think it’s interesting that UMich accepted (it appears) many of its ED applicants so quickly after initial deferral. Remember this the first year of ED being offered. In the meantime the good news for ED applicants is that they got into their (supposedly) top choice school and can now have options if they change their minds. I’m sure Michigan will also evaluate how many of the formerly ED applicants actually matriculate in preparing for next year’s application cycle.

Is it possible that UM decided they did not want to give the appearance of admitting a large portion of the class in ED, and instead, gave the ED-deferred applicants an edge in EA due to their high yield likelihood? Just thinking out loud.

I agree with your assessment.

Now that everyone spent their break being mad at Michigan and writing all their RD applications (which reminds you about all the other schools you liked) I wonder how many will actually choose Michigan in the end. Big miss by Michigan to mess up this ED admission so bad.

I don’t see it that way. Just because you apply ED doesn’t mean that you’re an auto admit. A short deferral with an admittance will help to determine how many applicants were truly committed to university.

Who knows, perhaps it’s their “experiment” on the ED applicants!

Did they release the EA results in waves like this year? Thanks.

They are known for accepting waitlisted and deferred kids in waves. This is unusual because they included EA kids in the batch. There will likely be multiple batches of acceptances over the next few weeks and then a lot of deferrals to RD.

If they're going to do this in future years, the date they choose to release will have an effect, not just on the apps the student puts in before getting the nonbinding acceptance after ED deferral, but also the whole vibe so to speak, as yesterday is much better than late Jan for how excited they might be - at least that's how I'd think if I were a student.

Unfortunately, they can really only pull off this surprise once. Next year, first week of Jan, deferred kids will be glued to their computers.

No. They released on Jan 24th. It was all admit, deny or waitlist in one batch.

Yep. The deferral (different school) cost $1,100 to complete 12 other RD applications and a wasted Xmas break.

I have twins - one was deferred and the other rejected from their early schools - so each completed another 15 RD apps. It was an expensive winter break and I did not go anywhere except for the gym.

Apparently Michigan released more EA admits today. Does anyone know if they send an email or do students just find out by checking their portals?

Ahhh, so they didn’t defer EA applicants to the regular round?
