I think it’s interesting that UMich accepted (it appears) many of its ED applicants so quickly after initial deferral. Remember this the first year of ED being offered. In the meantime the good news for ED applicants is that they got into their (supposedly) top choice school and can now have options if they change their minds. I’m sure Michigan will also evaluate how many of the formerly ED applicants actually matriculate in preparing for next year’s application cycle.
If they're going to do this in future years, the date they choose to release will have an effect, not just on the apps the student puts in before getting the nonbinding acceptance after ED deferral, but also the whole vibe so to speak, as yesterday is much better than late Jan for how excited they might be - at least that's how I'd think if I were a student. Unfortunately, they can really only pull off this surprise once. Next year, first week of Jan, deferred kids will be glued to their computers.
