Here’s one study showing that stillbirth risk doubles at 39 weeks for mothers 40 and over. At 40 weeks, it increases more than 7-fold. The study also says: “Overall, the risk of stillbirth increases a term of pregnancy in all maternal age groups, especially in older mothers.” https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/33228416/ |
I agree — I certainly did not mean to suggest that the rate of stillbirth isn’t going up for everyone, especially older moms, in later weeks of pregnancy. |

I was 39 and pregnant with twins. No mention of induction. Once it was confirmed that I would need a C-section it was scheduled for 40 weeks. Went the full 40 weeks with no problems.
Listen to the information they are sharing, but advocate for yourself and make the decision as you get closer to your due date. Congratulations on growing your family. |
Maybe you should have thought about bringing a child into this world with zero vaccines? Or all the possible things that could go wrong given the current administration. Have you read Project 2025 I doubt it that alone is horrifying for someone who is pregnant. They are going to take away all services for kids that are not "normal" Zero empathy. |
| Get induced. My baby was getting too large and then stopped moving. Scheduled the c section immediately. |

You're a geriatric pregnancy but likely you'll be fine. I think it is best for medical practitioners to be conservative than rah-rah.
Crossing my fingers for your other kids that it is a healthy sibling. |
This. I had my first at 41.5 weeks at age 33, and was induced for my second at 39 weeks, age 36. No specific complications but I was considered high risk due to prior miscarriages. This was 10 years ago and even then the widely accepted evidence was to induce at 39 weeks due to risk or age (or earlier obviously if indicated). It was totally fine. In fact better than the first since I was unmedicated with the first and had an epidural with the second. People forget that when you do everything the “natural” way, some number of stillbirths are part of that. No thanks. |
+1 I had a stillborn. Do what your doctors recommend. |
| I had twins and was told to have a C-section due to how they were positioned. I really did not want to have a c- section and questioned it but listened to the advice. In the end, looking back, it was not a big deal and was the better choice. |
Induction at 39 weeks regardless of age is the safest and most ideal. We did that for ours and it was convenient and safe. |
| All childbirth is natural why put yourself through danger of 39+ week non induction pregnancy. It's like Steve jobs trying to use yoga to cure cancer and it killed him |
| Obviously you've been blessed to have no complications. I've had 3 babies. 2 of 3 almost died at birth and the other I almost died. All under 39. |
| The thing is you can't be sure of how many weeks you are unless you did IVF. So there is the risk of inducing early which is what I think happened with my first son. Regardless, I've been induced, had a natural birth, a C-Section and then, at 43, an induced VBAC. The best was of course the natural birth but the last induced VBAC was also great - for me, the worst was the c-section. |
While you’re likely to be fine (I had a baby at 38 and it was easier than my baby at 35), things can happen. My sister lost a baby at 37 weeks. She has a perfect appointment that day and then just a random / fluke blood clot in the umbilical cord. |
Sure you can. Dating development is quite accurate. |
