Trump supporters, how are you ok with the social media history proposal?

Does your dog have a different ip address than you?

Even if it does, how about the computer MAC address, and the pattern of website visits that distinguishes each of us?

Even if we are good about using VPNs, how many of us have created a digital fingerprint by visiting this site, a site related to our current neighborhood and a site related to our birthplace regularly? How many of us have fleshed out our profiles by providing advice about travel to our current homes and sticking up for our alma maters?

Big Tech figured out they can track everyone based on your unique browser settings that are transmitted to every website. Also the social media thing is just about arresting you or deporting you later on because you failed to report an old college email or you didn't know LinkedIn was social media so didn't report that password.

The civilized world should just request the same of Americans. If they find anything pro Trump or pro maga then you get turned away.

All things considered, reviewing five years of a tourist's social media is not as horrific as other moves. But it suggests:

*utter disregard for the First Amendment
*our government going into mass surveillance mode
*a very predictable and costly negative effects on tourism (already happening!)

This fascism pure and simple. If a democrat had ever approximated any plans of this kind, you all would have lost your minds.

I want to understand how ANYONE who believes in civil liberties and core American principles can defend this.

It'll keep antisemites who dare criticize allies like Israel outside of our country.

As soon as we start kicking out anti-semites, half the Republican party and all of MAGA will be gone, so yeah right. Mr. "fine people on both sides" and Nick Fuentes can lead the exodus.

Isn't MAGA the party of "don't tread on me"???

This is one of the fascinating (although repellent, like looking at videos of that maggot cheese from Sardinia) things about MAGA. Militant right suspicion of govt magically disappears when they own the govt.

You're literally advocating for ethnic cleansing on a new continent so you can buy up all the real estate. I'm pretty sure it would be many of the European "semites" exiled to Uganda or Angola while claiming they're the original Africans this time, since there are also these so-called "anti-semites" on the American left as well.

And of course, it was always supposed to be an ethnostate in the Levant.

Great point. It’s not in my name. I’m not saying I put anything on the net that would cause me a problem either. I’m already wary of what the fascists plan to do.

OP and the person who lived in China are right though. This is a slippery slope and our rights are being gnawed away.

A real terrorist will just bring a burner phone.

Going into?

Been there for at least a decade.

I just don’t want people who hate us to come over here and try to ruin our country.

Any Republican not speaking out against this is a problem.

Do you understand surveilling foreigners vs Americans?

PS historically neither party has an issue with this.

This will involve collecting the information of Americans who correspond with foreigners. When researchers discuss political theory with their colleagues from abroad, the government will have a record of that discussion when the academic tries to enter the US for a conference. You will not be able to have certain discussions with your family members abroad. This is China-level chilling of US speech.

Do you think tourists who criticise the US government are coming over to ruin your country while on holiday? You needn’t worry as tourist numbers will fall off more than they already have.

In 2019, about 100,000 Australians came to the US per month. That’s now down to 50,000 per month and falling - 45,000 in November.

There is no chance tourists from Europe, Asia, and Australia are going to be to ok with this kind of invasion of their phones and lives when planning a vacation.

Business travelers will be even worse. There's often a lot of sensitive information on their phones.

Would you be ok giving up your phones and passwords so that another country can do a deep dive into everything you've ever communicated over the past five years, both professionally and personally?

Obviously not.

Republicans are absolutely destroying the US as a destination for anyone - tourist or business traveler. But I guess that's the point.

Putting aside the liberal histrionics, this is my problem with this. It simply seems unworkable.

If you are not hysterical about it, then you don't get it.

As far as how "workable" it is... you don't get how terror works. You only have to terrorize and abuse a certain number to create widespread fear.

That is what is going on here, PP. Wake the f up.

+1 LOL to that poster. Nobody is verifying it's real. Your neighbor or BIL has a beef with you and everyone likes him, nobody is going to verify. Remember how the president of the US said Haitians were eating cats and dogs?!? That's what will happen to you. MAGA didn't care if it was a lie because it was politically expedient, and that will be the same for your local bureau.

Could be next. And while not impossible it’s very, very inconvenient to navigate travel and many airports these days without a phone unless you get the paper ticket and closely follow the departure/arrival boards. I expect the next push will be NO paper tickets, only phone or you can’t board. Your Real ID is useless, your smartphone is now your ID card, welcome to 2026.

And don’t have a phone, left it home? That’s going to raise some eyebrows big time.

Exactly. When they announced social media vetting for student visa applicants, they even put out instructions telling state department staff to give extra scrutiny to people who don’t have social media accounts.

It’s the next best thing to some kind of sci-fi mind-reading technology. Social media chats can at least take a pulse. You in a bad mood over the election and share it with your buddies on FB? Now border security can deduce your leanings. What’s with those champagne and heart emojis back in 2020 when Biden won? 🤔

Did we all really think for one minute that FB was all about building community and keeping up those ties. 🤣
