Vance tries to do the same though may not be as effective at doing so - photos of him with a pope who died shortly after only endears him with a small segment of Catholics. Carlson is out there keeping his name in the news and clearly is Fuentes-friendly, who has his own aspirations. Kirk widow and Ivanka both have people whispering in their ears that their novelty campaign could propel them to the WH.

DK if an heir emerges, but do think the space will be contested in a way that hasn't been since Trump was a few months into the '16 GOP prez primary.

It doesn't matter what transpires during the 2028 GOP primary. As long as Trump is the sitting POTUS in 2028, the GOP will have no chance at election success just as they didn't in 2020 and just as the Dems had no chance in 2024 with Biden as the sitting POTUS. This is basic political science 101. Unpopular presidents are death to their party.

Given that I'm a political scientist, I'm well aware of how this works; moreover, I'm not talking about who will win the '28 election, but who will be contesting the space to run as the MAGA candidate.

There is a small chance of a break away movement by politicians seeing the light in time for a non-MAGA candidate to be nominated. The Trump endorsement is quickly losing its luster.

Who would be that non-MAGA candidate as everybody listed here is MAGA?

People who might run in 2038, MAGA or MAGA-adjacent: Marjorie Taylor Greene, Vance, Rubio, Cruz, maybe Noem.

RFK Jr might be the MAGA candidate. He's going to run again but not sure if Rep or Independent.

No it wasn't. He was changing his views and turning against Israel and as such would never have survived in this political atmosphere.

That was the only thing he was changing his views about. And many Republicans are as well (younger ones.)

Regardless of what avenue he chooses, he is MAGA.

TBH, all those folks listed above are MAGA. MTG can say she is renouncing it, but she still champions those values.

Hegseth is running.

Agree MTG is MAGA to the core. She is much more MAGA than Vance or Rubio. Both of them are followers who have sold their sould. Who knows what they really are deep down, if there even is a deep down. Vance is learning to school his face better when Trump says something stupid and I guess Rubio it, too. I think they are empty inside, which makes them bad as MAGA figureheads.

Im going to bet the next MAGA candidate is either South African or Australian.

I'll go further. The economy won't get much better in the next few years, so whether Trump sees the end of his term or not, the GOP is going to continue being deeply unpopular. If the Dems don't shoot themselves in the foot, as they usually do, this is their party. And by not shooting themselves in the foot, I mean they need a YOUNGER candidate than the ones with one foot in the tomb. It doesn't matter how moderate or progressive the candidate is, contrary to what some people think. But it needs to be someone young and charismatic. Voters respond to that.

Whoever it is will have as much of a chance in 2028 as Harris did in 2024 which is zero.
