I work in a high school, and a student who had a warrant for his arrest was arrested the first day of school. Apparently, student was able to evade the police all summer. Administrators and SSO's were placed strategically to direct student body traffic, and student was escorted in handcuffs out the back door so no other students could see it happen. Nothing went out to the community. It was very hush hush.

No. FCPS consistently sends schoolwide emails for any incident involving racist or hate speech — and to be clear, no one here is saying that racism is acceptable. Parents should be informed when those incidents occur.

The issue is that FCPS uses “privacy” as the justification for not communicating about many other serious problems in schools: bullying, violence, drug use, vaping, repeated disruptions, and safety concerns. Those incidents directly impact student well-being and school climate, yet parents hear nothing.

You can’t claim “privacy” when it’s convenient, and then abandon that same standard when an incident involves hate speech. Either privacy matters, or transparency matters — but right now FCPS is picking and choosing, and parents are left in the dark about issues that absolutely warrant communication and accountability.

The point is not to minimize racist incidents. The point is that FCPS should address all serious issues with the same level of urgency and transparency, instead of hiding behind “privacy” only when it suits them.

Why does your school have so many racist issues?

I have had kids at FCPS middle and high schools for over 12 years straight and we have never received emails about racist/antisemitic inciddnts like swasticas.

It sounds like your school has a racism issue based onnwhat kids are learning at home or online.

Not that PP but the racism issue at the local high school is Hispanic vs Black. The former writes the graffiti about the latter in the boy’s room, and they regularly fight in the lunchroom.

One person I had heard was involved in this is in the building ( saw them at a recent school event) and also they won an award recently. So maybe that information is incorrect.

How do you know he is a minor? Plenty of 18 year olds at HS

If it’s an issue of public safety or hate speech from multiple students, yes they will send a vague email about the issue. If it’s an issue about a specific student, they only send it to anyone directly impacted. It’s different.

As far as the student death goes FCPS cannot announce how a student died, unless they have explicit permission from the parents/guardians. Does not matter if it’s a car accident or murder.

You do not have the right to know every detail about every rumor that may or may not have happened at your school. There were police there? And your kid wasn’t involved? Then that’s all you need to know.

This admin has been problematic since he was hired. It is very on-brand of FCPS to give the guy that was suspended from his job the employee of the month award. Many parents know he is the main bully at Woodson

It is a wonder that local news is even allowed to report anything due to privacy concerns. Why why can the news report “there is an ongoing issue regarding xyz”to warn the community but the school cannot report same issue or the like to warn the community because that’s private?
