| Re late admissions to scholars, my DC got into scholars late after not applying initially. This was a few years ago so maybe less competitive then? DC had been accepted to SJC and another (arguably “better”) Catholic high school but preferred SJC. So I called admissions and asked if DC could be in scholars. HSPT scores were 95ish? Anyway, SJC said yes and it has been great. YMMV but you never know if you don’t ask. And things move a lot after the initial acceptances come out. |
Thanks for the insight! I’m sure this type of flexibility changes year to year, but sounds like SJC gained a great student and your DC had a great experience. |
| Did you reach out to admissions and ask for DC to be considered? Or did they reach out to you stating that DC was qualified? Sorry if I missed that part. |
|
I reached out to admissions. They did not call me. |
| I've had 2 kids go through scholars program and the nice thing about it IMO is that they will automatically be slotted into honors courses starting freshman year. |
| How many Scholars students make it through the program? I heard that students have to maintain a certain grade point with no Cs. How many students are in the program freshman year compared with senior year? |
I've never heard of a kid getting removed from scholars, but I'm sure it has happened. I doubt it happens frequently. |
I agree with this. I did hear there was a student who was at risk the past couple of years and entered into an improvement contract with the school that was signed by parents, student, and school. |
GZ’s Presidential Scholarship also requires students to get all As and Bs to be eligible annually. No Cs. Like SJC, I am not sure how strictly this is enforced or if there is a plan in place to help a student who may be slipping. I would think it would be in the school’s interest to support these students so that they don’t lose their scholarship, however it is also up to the students to maintain a certain standard to earn it. |

Anyone going to the event tomorrow?
Or on the flip side, did anyone decline it because your child does not intend to attend SJC? |
| We are going, DD is very excited. SJC de La Salle is her top choice, so we are thrilled she was invited to the event. |
| We are also going tomorrow. It’s currently our DS’s second choice, but a great one, so we are interested in hearing more. |

One thing I don’t recall hearing during Sunday’s session or the open house previously: how many students do they aim to have in each Scholar’s class?
My read was there were about 80-100 families in attendance on Sunday. I guess they expect a yield of around 50% of those kids? Is that correct? |
Good question! I’ve HEARD that there are 40-50 Scholars every year in the program, but those are not official admissions stats. This year’s Scholars class seems bigger, but so does the overall freshman class, so maybe there were more acceptances than anticipated? |
