Can you afford to buy coffee?

The Annie’s brand canned soups used to be between $2-$3. Now they’re almost $5. This is a quick dinner I used to give DD over WG rice before a sports practice that was cheaper and healthier than grabbing food on the way. Now it’s the same price.
I did buy a bag of Russett potatoes today for $3.99 and felt like that was a huge win, luckily we all like potatoes.

Yes there is inflation, but for the moment it's quite contained. People who are struggling with food prices now are operating on exceptionally tight budgets.

DH and I both have jobs and can’t help but notice how much food prices, along with everything else, have gone up. I don’t know why people are justifying the increased prices or saying to do without. The prices are increased due to government policies such as tariffs. It’s reality, and it’s annoying.

PP you replied to. DCUM is mostly Democratic and very much against tariffs and the current administration. The best way to get through the next few years is by being rational, instead of hysterical, OP.

Prices have increased. They will continue to do so. If you want to do something about it, you need to volunteer and donate to efforts pushing for a change in party at the top.

Surely you understand this.

Me again. If you want to rant about politics, you should direct your steps to the Politics Forum. You can fight all day long with everyone in that sandbox!

That person wasn't ranting.

Coffee prices went up largely because of significant failures in coffee harvests in key countries. I am not saying tariffs also didn't play a role but coffee prices have absolutely spiked in the past free of tariffs due to harvest failures.

I am 46 years old and the one constant in my life is that prices always go up. I used to feed myself on 50 a week when in grad school!

Folgers, Please.
I rather quit cold turkey or switch to tea.

Yeah, I’ll drink anything that’s not Dunkin’. I truly don’t care.

Where are you grabbing a quick dinner on the way for almost $5?

I stopped in last weekend and the owner rang me up and told me the tiny cup was $4.50! I sarcastically said "Are you sure?" and he felt so embarrassed he created a new button on his touch screen to revert the price back to $2.75.

"You're right, that doesn't sound right, let me fix that."

Sorry but who in the heck is going to pay $4.50 for a tiny cup of drip coffee in a normal suburb? To top it off, I walked out and the coffee was luke warm! I wouldn't have wanted it for free.

You must not live in the DC area pp...coffee hasn't been under 5$ for a cup for a decade.

We don’t eat much beef but recently DH (who never bothers to look at prices) grabbed some ground beef at Whole Foods and it was $11.49 for a 1 lb package. I almost fell over. I think it was an organic fancy one but still…

I use nespresso pods and they’ve gone up but it’s not crazy.

I think I see the problem. 🙂

Even the expensive stuff only costs $40 a pound, and that would last a month or two.
Cheap brand name stuff is only like $10 a pound or less. If you cannot afford that, then stop drinking the stuff.

A pound of coffee beans would not last a month in a home with 2 coffee drinkers. A pound is nothing.

I love coffee and I make it at home daily with an espresso machine.

We spend about $30-$40 a month on beans, which is nothing. Much cheaper than Starbucks!

Just bought a jar of instant Maxwell House for $12+. Last jar was probably $10. Big jump in price in a few months.

I don't believe that and no, it's not part of MAHA. It's part of you trying to spin it as a political issue.

It is a political issue. The high prices are due to Trumps tariffs.

We are in the DC area and Starbucks pick up order for an 8 ounce is under $2.75 including tax. Real time pricing just done by me.

Safeway value pack 80/20 was $3.29 per pound last week.

I buy ground coffee from a local shop/roaster every 2 weeks. It’s $15, so about $1/day.

I get a coffee out maybe once a week. My rule is no large chains - I’m not wasting money on Starbucks, dunkin, 7brew, etc. If it’s a coffee emergency, I go to McDonalds and spend the $2 on a large iced coffee.

I’m Cajun and use far more pork than beef in our weekly menu. If it is beef, it’s something like stew meat or tips that I can smother and put over rice. Steak has become very occasional. A lot of Cajun meals can use the scraps from other dishes and my budget appreciates that.
