PSA on SSSAS

I am in disbelief reading these posts. My daughter was on the retreat and she knows nothing about what is stated in these comments. The female dean that is mentioned is a wonderful person, but students/parents often get upset if she holds their child to standards.My daughter has gotten close to said Dean and has a wonderful relationship with her as do her friends. Her two brothers went to another DC independent school and we have horror stories.

Many parents I know are disappointed that SSSA did not issue a statement regarding the events surrounding Charlie Kirk's assassination, especially considering the significant number of young people, including SSSA students, who follow him and witnessed the disturbing video. It is concerning that the head of the school/Upper School Director did not send out any communication or have the chaplains reach out to students, as they did after the election. As a parent who has been part of the school community for over a decade, this lack of response speaks volumes.

It appears that the more vocal woke/left-leaning students get catered to, while others are left unheard. Rumor has it that the seniors were not allowed to visit the Lincoln Memorial for senior sunrise due to a couple of students expressing fear of the National Guard, resulting in the school making the senior sunrise at the Masonic Temple. It is ironic that these same students felt comfortable going to a Masonic Temple for the event, despite the temple's restrictions on women in certain areas. The situation is quite perplexing, but it seems that these students perceived it as a safer option. Another mom told me her kid overheard one of the students who complained telling others about it.

Wow. I’m a saints parent and I would have even outraged if they’d made a statement about Charlie Kirk (yes, I’m liberal). They don’t need to “make a statement” about everything that happens in the world. Do you even realize that a Saints parent died this past week? Much more of the community is affected by the loss of that member of the community (a relatively young parent) than by Charlie Kirk.

I wish the school would be more outspoken about their liberal values, but there is absolutely nothing MAGA about the school or its admin. Parents who want a statement about Charlie Kirk are truly in the wrong place.

You seem confused because senior sunrise has been at the Masonic Temple for years. If this year’s senior class thought this was a good year to break that tradition and go to the Lincoln Memorial, it would have been an odd choice.

Senior sunrise only started in 2020 - and on the athletic field that first year. It’s been at the Masonic Temple ever since.

In addition, women CAN go in the Masonic Temple. They can’t join the Freemasons because it’s basically a male fraternity for adults, but there are Masonic women’s organizations, too, and women can go to social events at the temple, just not Freemasons meetings.

Confusion? No confusion. The seniors wanted to change venues just like they did in 2020 to a different location which was the Lincoln Memorial. The tradition remains but they wanted a better location. Not an odd choice when so many of the DMV schools public/private go there as well. Go on instagram and see all the schools that do senior sunrise at Lincoln. The odd choice is the Masonic Temple!

Yes they do!!!!! I mean follow or watch on social media not like follow like a member of an organizaton OR church.
All the students were sharing that terrible video of Mr. Kirk being assassinated. It is a big deal when a person is assassinated because that disturbing video impacts those students and parents. Many follow Charlie Kirk on social media even if they do not agree with him. The younger generation liked watching his debates on campuses. I do not mean like follow him as member of his organization but follow on social media. These students follow all kinds of social media influencers and people on Tik Tok and instagram. They follow social media or watch Charlie Kirk’s debates as he is well known among college and high school kids!

And you prefaced it with “rumor says” so you don’t even know if anyone really did want to change venues. Furthermore, the whole thing is organized by the students, and I don’t think the school weighs in on where they go, so if some did want to change venues they were voted down by their peers, not disallowed by the school.

I agree there should’ve been a vote from the student senior class. The school did weigh in on where they would go because the students complained to the school administration. A couple students complained about going to the Lincoln Memorial because of the National Guard. These students told other students what they did. I’m just sharing an aspect of the school that people can take what they want from it, but it did happen. I didn’t make it sound like they were normally at the Lincoln Memorial you just read it that way. I said the senior class was not allowed to go to the Lincoln Memorial and had to go to the Masonic Temple because of a couple students complaining to the dean about their concern going to the Lincoln Memorial with the National Guard. This did happen it is not a rumor. The two students could’ve declined going but instead they complain and they get what they want even if the majority wanted to go to the Lincoln Memorial. If there was a vote they would of been at the Lincoln. This was politics by 17 year old students.

I am curious how other moderate, republican not necessarily MAGA students and families feel there? My student is careful with teachers who make it known they are liberal/woke for fear it could impact their grade in the class.They do not feel free to share their opinions or their perspectives at all because of how administrators/coaches/teachers might treat them.There are more republican and moderate leaning students and families there than many realize but if they continue down their current path they will be looking at a decrease in enrollment/donations over the next 4-8 years.
