Duke vs Penn ed

Anonymous
Can we continue an intelligent conversation and tune out the anti-Duke troll?

One can give a constructive, useful description of schools without insulting them.

At least in a normal society that is possible. I'm starting to question that here...

Do you have any empirical basis for this assertion? Or are you just divinely intuitive?

The Duke=DBag stereotype actually works out well for Duke. Because it removes all of the people who are dumb enough to believe it. I wouldn't want to go to school with anyone like that anyway.

And by the way, Penn (and most other top schools) have their fair share of the exact type of person that people stereotype as a Duke DBag - Duke has far from cornered the market on them.

I mean, where did Trump (and his kids Beavis and Butthead) and Musk go to school?

You: sigh, more stereotyping of duke students?

Also you: Penn has douchebag students

I am saying that every school has them so stop just pointing at Duke. Clearly you didn't go to either school as you are not smart enough to understand this.

Ohhhh good one…

You: whoops, got called on my hypocrisy

Also you: better hurl an insult…

Stay classy San Diego

It is so sad that rather than trying to share knowledge and experience with others, people come here to insult others, nit pick and for pathetic little power trips.

Yet you are the one obsessed with DBags.

Both schools are incredible. Like any large group of people, both have many different people including plenty of menschs and plenty of DBags. In the grand scheme of things they aren’t that different. But the campuses are different, the political climate is different, the size is slightly different, urban/suburban is different.

I insulted no one. I also insulted no schools.

You insulted me.

And you (or perhaps someone else) said Duke is overrun with DBags. That is insulting.

Parroting back a summary of what you've said is not insulting you. It's fact and you're opinion is that it was an insult. The only way it is so, is if you're insulting others (students at Duke, my intelligence, etc.).

I have never insulted any student at any school and did not post the Duke-student insults.

It's a fact that all Duke students and alums are DBags? Really? I have no loyalty to the school and I think that is an ignorant, childish, low class, mean thing to say (in addition to being incorrect).

My children and I are patients of several doctors who are Duke alums who is the kindest, smartest, most compassionate, down-to-earth human being I have ever met. So I do take this very personally.

But you generalize some more.

Also, it's your, not you're. I will hope that is a typo and not you further advertising your (or you're?) ignorance.

Once again: I have never said anything about Duke or Duke students- good or bad. I know nothing about either but entered this post bc my kid is interested in one of those teo schools.

You’re confusing different posters. All I have do r is point out that you’re stereotyping and insulting Penn (and other) students AND insulted my intelligence.

There are lots of people posting here. One dbag said Duke is only dbags. And either that person or someone else (who knows) replied supporting that. Others have pushed back at that and said that is mean and wrong and every school has dbags but to say everyone at Duke is a dbag is not ok. Saying there are a few dbags at Penn or Duke or anywhere else is not insulting the school or its students. Saying everyone at the school is a dbag is insulting (and ignorant and dumb).

That is all. Let’s move on.

Np, you are doing a great job proving them right.

Yes, please cite a peer-reviewed source for Duke’s douche quotient. Preferably one with lots of stats & charts. Because the sworn testimony of literally everyone who has ever met a Duke grad is just not enough.

Do you people ever stop. I don’t think this childish crap is what they were looking for. But if it makes you feel tough to generalize and insult all alums of a school then you be you.

Well my niece went to Duke and has lived her time there. She and pretty much all her peers have had an amazing amazing experience there. This school has been constantly in top ten past all the years except for once. It’s a good place to be and anyone who gets a chance is lucky

Penn for Ivy brand and network.

Duke attracts totally different students than Penn. Couldn’t think of anything in common except 4 letters.. Penn is the poor step child of HYP.

Considering this is probably the 10th DCUM thread on Penn vs Duke (go search the archives)…it seems to attract the same students.

Kid at Penn, picked it over Duke both RD. Other friends at Penn have done the same. Yet our relative picked Duke over Penn for ED. It is a fit thing. Both are amazing, maybe slight prestige edge to Penn based on tech recruiting as well as med&law matriculation destinations of undergrads.

Anonymous wrote:A potentially important difference: this coming year Penn is test required while Duke is still test optional, meaning Duke is going to attract many applicants with relatively weak SAT/ACT who self-select out of applying to Penn.

Good point. Duke's long-time Dean of Admissions retired after last year and there is an interim in place right now. My guess is that Duke is punting on a decision for now and will let the new Dean decide. My guess is that they will get rid of test optional, but who knows. But for this year's applicant, it is a difference.

Duke also has the Glimpse video in its app (I think that is the name) - it isn't required but it is kind of encouraged. Does Penn have that? I think it is a horrible idea. I'm all for getting to know applicants better but it adds a huge level of stress to an already stressful process, and it further emphasizes Type A, very pointy kids over nice, well-rounded kids who might not be fully formed socially at the age of 17 who used to be more prevalent at these schools.

Last I heard, Duke was going to review the data after another year or two to evaluate how the TO kids fared at Duke compared to those who submitted scores.

Also, if someone thinks Duke students are awful, go ahead and apply elsewhere. It’s totally fine. Not every school is a good fit for every kid/family. Find what works for you.

FWIW, I’d recommend OP’s kid ED at Penn. If the city vibe appeals to him enough to consider ED’ing there, I think he’d miss it and/or be bored in Durham after a year or two. It doesn’t have that big city vibe, and it’s pretty isolated - would need a car, unlike Penn, where kids can hop on Amtrak and head to NYC or DC if they want.

But you should ED (if you would be totally happy there) at the school that is more likely to produce an admit.

I think that's Penn.

Except that’s not true at all…the closest that exists is Parchment which isn’t statistically significant (which in itself indicates it’s an odd choice) but what exists shows kids pick Penn 54% of the time

Parchment is pretty worthless

It's not "true or false" anyway when it's my option of what students should choose.

Duke PPS is amazing and worth the ED shot, IMHO.
