Doctors use things off label all the time! It’s completely routine. I get that the pharmacist at cvs might not be able yo give it but your pcp will certainly either give it or write you an order to take to the cvs.

No wonder all the CDC people are quitting. These new guidelines on vaccination are contrary to the body of evidence on covid vaccination.

The agency is limiting the updated shots to people who are at risk for serious complications because they are 65 or older or have other health problems. Until now, COVID vaccines had been available to anyone 6 months and older regardless of their health.

The decision is expected to make it harder for many people, such as healthy children and healthy younger adults, to get a shot ahead of the expected winter COVID surge. That's already generating confusion and apprehension that harkens back to the early days of the pandemic, when people often had to frantically search for a shot.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is expected to weigh in soon with influential recommendations on who should get inoculated. But the CDC has already dropped guidelines that call for all healthy children and healthy pregnant women to routinely get vaccinated – a decision many doctors and public health experts say is especially alarming.

Federal health officials say the changes are warranted because most people have so much immunity at this point. They also question the vaccines' safety and effectiveness – doubts dismissed by most public health experts and contradicted by a large body of scientific evidence.

My understanding is it’s not banned, it doesn’t have the “fda approved for healthy adults younger than 65” stamp. That is absurd and idiotic (and makes it inconvenient in that it may not be at cvs and insurance may not pay) but doctors can absolutely still give it to whoever they think it is appropriate for.

For example some of the SSRIs have gone through the process to get fda approval for various anxiety disorders in addition to depression. However since all of the ssris work for those doctors use whatever ssri they think is appropriate for a particular patient, regardless of whether it has approval for social anxiety or generalized anxiety or whatever. That’s considered an off label use just like this will be.

Heck, many asthma inhalers are "off label" for a lot of pediatric patients. They are still prescribed by pediatricians and pulmonologists.

I live in Massachusetts and just called my insurance company yesterday to get confirmation that the COVID and flu vaccines will be covered for me, even sans prescription.

I have a qualifying condition - which is so BS because being a human being above ground should be qualifying - but wasn’t sure it would be covered. It is. I heard a piece on NPR this morning that insurers were not going to drop coverage of the vaccines because they recognize it reduces illness severity, hospitalization and thus substantially reduces overall medical treatment costs.

Sadly I called my pharmacy and the vaccine is not yet available- they expect it within weeks. But I suppose the way this administration runs and given the firing of the CDC director and resignation of others in leadership there, maybe they are planning not to allow us to get them.

Honestly I wouldn’t put it past DJT and RFK Jr. that they would just like to shave off all the disabled and chronically ill and elderly and morbidly obese lives, even if it means some dead kids and pregnant women in the mix.

I also saw several real news articles today saying that the FDA approved the new booster and the vaccine panel will come out with recommendations by mid-September.

Yes! I work in population health for an insurance company and we love the vaccine. It saves us millions. Remember, a hospital stay is 12k/day in DC on average. Insurance companies will not drop Covid vaccine coverage unless they are forced by law.
