Yet another parent who knows nothing about swimming. According to our rep, there was one false start the entire meet. Starters can't control whether swimmers are properly set. If you don't like the starter, why don't you spend the hours it takes to get certified, get the practice starts in, and then convince your division coordinator to appoint you. Otherwise, you should STFU and stop maligning volunteers who are only trying to give every kid a fair start. You are part of the reason teams have trouble finding volunteers....

There was only one false start but there were too many stands. Not sure if your rep mentioned that or not.

You want to give everyone a good start, but you also want there to be a rhythm so the kids have a fair and equitable chance like the heat in front of them or around the league which is what you are comparing times to on that one given day. Don’t get me started on that process how one race determines your All Star chance.

When you stand and hold kids it messes with the rhythm. Give them the time to stop wiggling then push the button. Don’t just stand them to stand them.

I was at the meet and there was also a lot of crowd noise that could have contributed to the stands. I think he did the best he could, but could keep polishing his skills just like all of us.

He’s not polishing his skills. He’s been counseled by the Div Coordinator before for this exact issue and he is not supposed to working higher level meets (and is specifically barred from the CB-T dual meet). The crowd noise was groaning when he took over before breaststroke and immediately iced the 8U boys twice.

In NVSL division coordinators have the deciding say in which officials work at Divisionals. (The teams recommend their officials, and sometimes the officials of other teams, but then the division coordinator makes the final decisions). So it makes no sense that the division coordinator thought the starter shouldn't work at higher level meets, and they were the starter at divisionals.

He had to cave and let him start because CB hosted.

What?!? Manor Woods hosted divisionals, not CB. It was at the Manor Woods pool and their parents hosted it. You’re not making any sense.

I think CB means Chesterbrook. NVSL D1 host.

We joined one of the D1 pools and my kids joined swim team not having a clue about any of this. Didn’t even know they were D1. Before the first meet, an intrateam scrimmage, my son was throwing up in the bathroom from nerves. I just wanted him to be a good swimmer and have fun. I had no idea!

This is just plainly not true. This starter has NOT been "counseled" and had no need to be. No division coordinator needed to "cave" and let him start. Stop spreading lies.

Plus, this starter is very well-respected and has worked many higher level meets (winter swim club championship meets). So, with all due respect, unless you have read the rulebook and completed the necessary training to become a starter, you shouldn't be critiquing his starting. If he stands the field, that's because the swimmers are not properly set, not because he is purposely trying to "ice" kids.

Also, it's summer swim. Teach your kids to get set, then you can complain. And lastly, it's not like people are vying for the starter position -- he is sacrificing his time, spending hours in the hot sun under the scrutiny of all you parents to give kids from six different pools a fun and competitive meet. Can you say the same? Just some thoughts.

Exactly. The criticism of the CB starter is way off mark and made by people who clearly don't understand a thing about real swimming or officiating. The CB starter is one of the most experienced starters out there and officiates at the highest-level PVS championship meets. Standing the field is REQUIRED if there are fidgety kids or kids moving at the start. That's the rule. The reason is moving at the start conveys a starting advantage, and it's also not fair to the kids who are already set to make them wait or hold a position just so the fidgety kid in the heat can get set. The starter was doing his job as he should. If your young or inexperienced kid was thrown, then you or your coaches need to do a better job preparing the kids. This is the sport.
