Recs for in-state (VA) 3.5 GPA

If DC is lucky, they might end up with a 3.5. They want a school with a rah-rah spirit but the VA options (JMU, Tech and UVA) are a huge reach.

What schools should they consider? Please don't recommend Mason, VCU or UMW. Those schools are out.

Are ODU and CNU our best bet? Will WVU give merit for a low 3.something GPA?

So you would consider OOS? You already eliminated 6 in-state options. WVU would give merit. Also ECU, App St and CCU.

OP here--we would consider OOS if we can bring cost to a relatively similar place. Is that even possible with a 3.5 GPA?

Maybe West VA?

Some kids don't vibe with the urban campus. Mine wants a more traditional campus and I get that. Kid wants to study pre-nursing or something similar.
.

VCU is a comprehensive university with some excellent programs and a medical school to boot. Of course it’s good for nursing.

It also has Division 1 sports, a very popular basketball program, and is extremely diverse. I’d send my kid there over CNU in a heartbeat.

Even if your kid didn't want an urban campus?

Choosing a college primarily on the basis of its campus is silly

It's an important factor

WVU and Kentucky. My kid got merit from both. WVY may have been the cheapest. Got great merit from Iowa. Maybe under 40? Even got merit from Mizzou. Mizzou lets you get in state after a year. Got merit from Arizona. Would still have been about 45?

Miami of Ohio is awesome but they care more about W gpa than UW. So, for us it was too much. Try OU?

I understand the potential cost savings for tuition but that travel 3-5 times a year adds up.

Not really. Lots of overlap between JMU and VT students academically.

You really need to go away.

Why? It's true.

Because you continue to be deliberately obtuse and contrarian.

UVA overlaps with Duke in terms of SATs. That doesn’t mean that Duke isn’t more selective than UVA. Or are you now going to insist that it isn’t?

I never said VT wasn't more selective than JMU. I said that a 1360 wasn't functionally different from a 1260 and that the two schools' student bodies were extremely similar. In VA, JMU's student body is most similar to VT, and VT's student body is most similar to JMU.

Well isn’t that special?

We’re talking about VA options for a kid with a 3.5. Tech isn’t one of them. So, fine, make your point that the schools have similar feels. But don’t deliberately cloud the waters and antagonize time again with your one sentence cryptic responses essentially poo pooing the difference between the two.

In other words, stay on track bro.

Virginia Tech is absolutely in the cards for a 3.5 GPA.

In what universe? You do realize the Virginia reports official numbers on the SCHEV website, right? The cutoff for the bottom 25% at Tech last year was a 3.91 weighted GPA. OP‘s kid has a 3.5 weighted GPA. He doesn’t even register on the radar.

What about Penn State for your kid?

Penn state and Pitt ate also competitive for 3.5w from nova. At Penn State you’ll probably be offered a 2+2 package where you get to go to one of the non-main campus Penn State’s for two years and then go to the main campus of Penn State for the final two years.

Duke is significantly more selective than UVA.

uva and tech are out, not reaches, if otherwise no hook. ED to JMU.

Nice suggestion, but JMU doesn't offer ED.

+1
We so wish they would institute ED at JMU (and bring it back at VT).
